Microsoft has confirmed that the September 2026 security updates for Windows 11 can prevent some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices from starting or producing sound. The problem is not a model-wide recall and does not cover every USB DAC, interface, headset or speaker. It is a Windows compatibility regression with a narrowly stated USB Audio Class scope.

What Microsoft confirmed

After the September 8 security update, an affected USB Audio Class 1.0 device may show Device Manager error “This device cannot start (Code 10),” produce no sound, leave volume controls stuck at zero, or make Windows sound settings unavailable or unresponsive.

Microsoft also says that some affected devices can work in ordinary stereo mode but fail when multichannel functions are enabled, including 8-channel or 3D-audio modes. The company’s release-health record lists the issue as Confirmed and says a resolution is being developed.

Exact Windows scope

For Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, Microsoft identifies KB5124008, with OS builds 26100.9445 and 26200.9445. For Windows 11 26H1, Microsoft identifies KB5124012, with OS build 28000.2954. Microsoft lists no affected Windows Server platform for this USB-audio issue.

The limitation to USB Audio Class 1.0 matters. This record must not be generalized to USB Audio Class 2.0 products, Bluetooth devices, HDMI audio, built-in sound hardware, or every device marketed as a USB DAC. Some products can expose different USB-audio modes, so owners should confirm the active mode from the manufacturer’s documentation rather than infer it from the connector alone.

What owners can check

  1. Confirm the Windows version, installed KB and OS build in Windows Update history.
  2. Check Device Manager for Code 10 and record the device’s exact model and hardware revision.
  3. If the device works in stereo but fails in a multichannel mode, test 2-channel output. Microsoft reports that some customers restored audio this way; it is not described as a universal fix.
  4. Where practical, test the same device on a system that has not installed the affected update, or on another supported operating system, before concluding that the audio hardware has failed.
  5. Keep the device manufacturer’s driver and firmware guidance separate from the Windows issue. Microsoft has not published a list of affected models or a device-firmware remedy.

Microsoft has not published update removal as its general workaround for this audio issue, and doing so may remove security protections. Owners who depend on an affected device for production work should preserve their current configuration, document the symptoms and follow Microsoft and the device manufacturer’s support guidance.

What this means for buyers

A buyer using Windows 11 should not treat a single post-update failure as proof that a DAC, interface or speaker is defective. Before returning hardware, verify whether it operates as USB Audio Class 1.0 and whether the PC has KB5124008 or KB5124012 installed.

For a new purchase, confirm whether the product supports USB Audio Class 2.0, offers a manufacturer driver, can switch between USB-audio modes, or provides an alternative input. These are resilience checks, not evidence that USB Audio Class 2.0 or proprietary-driver products are automatically immune to every Windows problem.
