FiiO FT1 vs FT1 Pro: Closed-Back vs Open Planar

Short answer: choose the FiiO FT1 when isolation, lower sound leakage and use around other people are the real requirements. Choose the FT1 Pro when you can listen in a quiet private room and specifically want an open-back planar design. The word “Pro” does not make it a universal upgrade.

• Buy FT1 for an office, shared room, recording near a microphone, or any situation where leakage matters.
• Buy FT1 Pro only for quiet-room listening where an open-back design is acceptable.
• Keep what you have if your current headphone already solves isolation, fit and output-level needs. Neither model is an automatic upgrade.
• Do not buy a new amplifier first. FiiO positions both models as relatively easy to drive. Test your current source at the required volume and EQ setting before spending more.

Verified differences that change the purchase

These figures come from FiiO’s official FT1 and FT1 Pro pages. They describe construction and electrical requirements; they do not establish which headphone sounds better.

Closed-back or open-back is the real choice

The FT1’s closed construction is the decisive advantage when other people are nearby. It reduces outward leakage and provides passive isolation, although it is not active noise cancellation. That makes it the more defensible choice for desks, shared bedrooms, public transport and tracking near a live microphone.

The FT1 Pro is intentionally open. You should assume that room noise will remain audible and that people nearby can hear your playback. Do not buy it for a library, flight, shared office or vocal recording booth simply because its model name contains “Pro”.

Editorial Inference: if you do not know where the headphone will be used most often, the FT1 is the lower-risk purchase because it works in more environments. That is a use-case judgment, not a listening-test verdict.

What this comparison can—and cannot—say about sound

Enclosure and driver type are verified, but they are not substitutes for level-matched listening or measurements. An open-back planar headphone may create a different presentation from a closed dynamic model, yet terms such as “faster”, “more detailed”, “warmer” or “more musical” are not verified merely by reading the specification sheet.

FiiO publishes acoustic-performance claims for both products. Those remain Brand Claims until independently tested. SoundPath Lab therefore does not assign either model a winner for bass, imaging, timbre, detail or genre matching in this reassessment.

If tonal balance is central to your decision, use an audition with matched playback level and familiar material, or consult independent measurements that document the rig, seal and smoothing. Pad condition, glasses, head shape and fit can all change the result.

Source compatibility: start with the device you own

FiiO lists 32 Ω / 113 dB/Vrms for FT1 and 20 Ω / 112 dB/Vrms for FT1 Pro. Those published values support FiiO’s positioning that neither headphone is intended to demand an exotic amplifier. They do not guarantee enough headroom from every phone, laptop or interface.

1. Connect the 3.5 mm cable to the source you already use.
2. Play a quiet and a dynamic recording at your normal volume.
3. If you use EQ, include the negative preamp and the largest boost in the test.
4. Check for adequate volume, clean peaks and usable volume-control range.
5. Only then consider a DAC/amp with more output or a quieter noise floor.

The included 4.4 mm cable is a connection option, not proof that balanced output is necessary. A 4.4 mm output can provide more voltage on some devices, but the connector alone does not improve fidelity.

Build and support: the documented issue record

FiiO published an official service notice on February 14, 2025 covering two separate matters. SoundPath Lab tracks them in the FT1 series issue record.

• Brand Response — pivot screws: FiiO says adhesive failure affected a small number of early FT1 and FT1 Pro units after long use. It says the structure and process changed for batches produced from November 20, 2024, and offers service through sellers or FiiO support.
• Brand Response — FT1 Pro low-frequency noise or distortion: FiiO describes rare reports associated with very low frequencies and large diaphragm excursion, and says it added inventory checks, listening sweeps and tighter production control.
• Unknown: FiiO does not publish an incidence rate, full serial-number range, regional stock map or independent post-change validation. “Resolved” is therefore a manufacturer claim, not a SoundPath Lab verified outcome.

These notices do not justify calling every FT1-series unit defective. They do justify simple checks during the return window and careful documentation if a repeatable problem appears.

Owner responsibility: checks worth doing

• Before purchase: confirm the exact model, seller return window and local warranty route. For used or old-stock units, ask for production-date evidence rather than inferring it from purchase date.
• On arrival: inspect the pivot joints, screw heads, cable sockets, pads and headband adjustment before discarding packaging.
• For FT1 Pro: test ordinary music and a controlled sweep at safe volume while wearing the headphone. Do not use dangerous SPL to force a symptom.
• If a fault repeats: record the track or frequency, channel, source, volume position, cable, EQ state and whether the behavior occurs while worn.
• For fit: test at least one uninterrupted session inside the return window. Weight numbers do not predict pressure distribution for every head.

Keep, switch or add?

Keep your current headphone

Keep it when isolation, fit and clean listening volume are already adequate. Replacing a working headphone because the FT1 Pro uses a planar driver or because “Pro” sounds higher in the range is not an evidence-based upgrade case.

Switch to FT1

Switch when the problem to solve is leakage, outside noise, microphone bleed or all-purpose use. The FT1 is also the more practical single-headphone choice when listening locations change.

Switch to or add FT1 Pro

Choose FT1 Pro when you have a quiet private room and deliberately want an open-back planar system role. If you already own FT1, FT1 Pro is better framed as a complementary use case than a linear replacement: one handles privacy, the other does not.

For the wider open-back range, compare the FT1 Pro with the FiiO FT15 and FT5 before paying for a higher-tier model. A higher price or model number still needs to solve a specific limitation.
