Audio Industry Briefing: Bose QuietComfort 2nd Gen, Marantz CINEMA Series 2 and August Hi-Fi Shows — August 8, 2026

Bose has opened preorders for its second-generation QuietComfort headphones, Marantz has put its CINEMA Series 2 receiver pages live, and Creative has begun selling a compact LDAC desktop speaker system. Two major regional shows are also under way this weekend. One additional portable player, Astell&Kern’s PD5, is included with a clear pending-verification label because several purchase-critical specifications remain unpublished.

Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen): Ultra features move down the range

Event date: August 6, 2026. Status: Officially confirmed.

Bose announced the QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) with a refreshed design, its QuietControl noise-cancellation system and TrueSpatial immersive modes previously reserved for the Ultra line. The three spatial modes are Still, Motion and Cinema. Wired USB-C playback now supports lossless audio up to 24-bit/48 kHz.

Preorders opened on August 8 at $359, with shipments scheduled to begin August 13. Bose lists Black and White Smoke plus three limited colors: Eucalyptus Green, Dewdrop Mint and Rosewood Mauve.

Why it matters: The regular QuietComfort model now overlaps more heavily with the Ultra range. Buyers should compare comfort, ANC behavior and street pricing rather than assuming the Ultra badge automatically delivers the better value. Spatial processing is an optional listening feature, not a substitute for checking codec, latency and wired-use requirements.

Marantz CINEMA Series 2: three receiver tiers with new DAC platforms

Announcement date: August 6, 2026. Status: Official product pages live; regional availability varies.

Marantz has introduced the CINEMA 50 Series 2, CINEMA 60 Series 2 and slimline CINEMA 70s Series 2. All three use an upgraded 32-bit, eight-channel DAC platform, support Dolby Atmos, include HDMI eARC and retain HEOS streaming and multi-room control.

• CINEMA 50 Series 2: 9.4 channels, 110 watts per channel, up to 11.4-channel preamp operation, six 8K HDMI inputs and a US list price of $3,000.
• CINEMA 60 Series 2: 7.2 channels, 100 watts per channel, six HDMI inputs and a US list price of $2,000.
• CINEMA 70s Series 2: slimline 7.2-channel design, 50 watts per channel, six HDMI inputs and a US list price of $1,500.

Why it matters: The model number alone does not describe the practical upgrade. Room-correction entitlement, processing-channel count, HDMI capacity and regional variants should be checked separately. The CINEMA 50 is the flexible choice for larger layouts; the 70s prioritizes chassis size and should not be treated as a high-power equivalent.

Creative XF1: compact desktop speakers add LDAC, USB-C and parametric EQ

Availability date: August 6, 2026. Status: Officially confirmed.

Creative’s XF1 is a bi-amplified 2.0 desktop speaker system rated at 72 watts RMS. It combines Bluetooth 6.0 with LDAC, USB-C audio up to 24-bit/96 kHz, a 3.5 mm line input and a dedicated subwoofer output. The Creative Nexus app provides a 10-band parametric EQ and more than 100 presets. The pair is listed at $179.99 in the United States and is offered in black or white.

Why it matters: The XF1 sits between inexpensive PC speakers and conventional nearfield monitors. Its connectivity and app EQ make it easy to integrate, but buyers should not confuse Hi-Res certification or Bluetooth version numbers with verified acoustic neutrality. The subwoofer output is useful for a staged 2.1 upgrade.

Astell&Kern PD5: long-battery DAP shown in Hong Kong

Show debut: August 7–9, 2026. Status: Pending verification.

Astell&Kern is showing the PD5 as a successor to the A&norma SR35. Media briefings describe switchable four- and eight-DAC operation using Cirrus Logic CS43198 chips, up to 28 hours of playback in the lower-power mode, Android-based streaming, Bluetooth 5.3 and a new EnviroTune function that adjusts playback to ambient noise.

What remains unverified: Astell&Kern has not yet published a complete PD5 product page with output power, Android version, dimensions, weight, storage, screen specification, eight-DAC battery life, retail price or final availability. Those gaps materially affect buying advice, so the PD5 should not yet be ranked against established DAPs.

Hong Kong and Raleigh host parallel audio shows, August 7–9

The Hong Kong High-End AV Head-fi Show is under way at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. TEAC’s official exhibitor notice lists the NT-507T, PD-507T, UD-507 and TN-400BT-X at booth S244. Audio Advice Live is running on the same dates at the Sheraton Hotel in Raleigh, North Carolina. The official event site lists brands including Sony, McIntosh, Bowers & Wilkins, KEF, Marantz, JVC, JBL, MartinLogan and Focal.

Why it matters: Show demonstrations are useful for comparing ergonomics, system integration and industrial design, but room acoustics and unfamiliar setups make them poor substitutes for controlled listening. Readers evaluating announced products should record the exact model, software version and signal chain used in each demo.
