WiiM Voice Remote 2 Only Works While Charging: Battery Fault?

The WiiM Voice Remote 2 replaces disposable batteries with a built-in rechargeable battery and USB-C charging. In normal use, it should continue working after the cable is removed. We have now collected multiple similar cases showing the same unusual failure:

The remote works normally while connected to USB-C power, but becomes completely unresponsive as soon as the charging cable is unplugged.

This pattern is more consistent with an internal power-system fault than an ordinary Bluetooth pairing problem. The battery, charging circuit, protection circuit or internal battery connection may be involved. We have not opened or laboratory-tested the affected units, so the exact failed component remains unconfirmed.

What affected users are seeing

Across the cases reported to us, the symptoms are remarkably consistent:

  • The remote responds normally while connected to a USB charger.
  • The indicator light comes on and the buttons control the paired WiiM device.
  • Removing the USB-C cable causes the remote to stop responding immediately.
  • Several hours of charging do not restore cordless operation.
  • Re-pairing may work while external power is present, but does not solve the unplugged failure.

If pairing alone were the problem, connecting a power cable should not suddenly restore every button. The decisive symptom is immediate loss of all operation when external power is removed.

What might be causing the fault?

1. A defective or deeply discharged lithium battery

The internal cell may no longer accept or hold a usable charge. USB power can operate the remote directly, but removing it leaves the remote without power.

2. The battery is not actually charging

A charging light does not necessarily prove that energy is reaching the cell. A fault in the charging IC, battery-protection circuit or wiring could let the remote run from USB while the battery remains empty.

3. A loose internal battery connection

A damaged connector or solder joint could electrically isolate the battery while leaving USB-powered operation intact.

4. Power-management or firmware behaviour

This cannot be excluded without further testing, although the immediate shutdown after unplugging makes a hardware power-path issue appear more likely.

Is this a widespread defect?

At the time of publication, SoundPath Lab has collected reports involving multiple affected units with the same “plugged-in only” behaviour.

That is enough to document and monitor the issue, but not enough to calculate a failure rate or call it a universal defect. We do not yet know total sales volume, whether the affected remotes share a production batch, or how long they were stored before first use.

The failure described here is also more severe than disappointing battery life. An affected remote appears unable to operate from its rechargeable battery at all.

Checks to perform before requesting replacement

Try another USB-C cable and charger

Use a known-good cable and a conventional 5V USB power source. This rules out an unstable cable or unusual charger during diagnosis.

Charge for several hours

A deeply discharged cell may need time to recover. After charging, unplug the cable and test again.

Re-pair the remote

Open the WiiM Home app and go to Device → Device Settings → Remote. Follow the pairing instructions. On the Voice Remote 2, pairing normally involves holding the Mute and Source buttons until the indicator flashes.

Perform the decisive unplugged test

  1. Confirm that the remote controls the WiiM device while connected to USB.
  2. Remove the charging cable.
  3. Press several buttons and watch the indicator light.
  4. Record a short video showing both conditions.

If the indicator and every button stop immediately after unplugging, repeated pairing is unlikely to fix the underlying issue.

What affected owners should do

Do not open the aluminum remote or attempt to replace its lithium battery while it is under warranty. Damaging or puncturing a lithium cell can be dangerous and may void warranty coverage.

Contact the seller or WiiM support and provide:

  • Product name: WiiM Voice Remote 2
  • Purchase date and order number
  • Serial number or product-label photo, if available
  • Approximate charging time
  • Charger and cable used
  • A short video showing operation when plugged in and failure when unplugged
  • The paired WiiM device
  • WiiM Home app and device firmware versions

A clear fault description is:

The WiiM Voice Remote 2 functions normally while connected to USB-C power, but becomes completely unresponsive immediately after the cable is removed, even after extended charging and re-pairing.

For a new or warranty-covered unit, replacement is more appropriate than repeatedly attempting to pair it.

A design trade-off worth noting

The original WiiM remote uses replaceable batteries. The second-generation model looks cleaner and avoids disposable cells, but a sealed rechargeable design creates a new long-term weakness: if the battery or charging circuit fails, the owner cannot simply install fresh batteries.

A rechargeable remote should remain useful for years, not turn into a wired remote. WiiM should investigate whether these cases relate to a production batch, battery supplier or storage condition, and provide straightforward replacements when the fault is confirmed.

We are collecting more cases

If your Voice Remote 2 shows the same behaviour, email editorial@soundpathlab.com with your country, purchase date, serial number or label photo, charging time, whether it ever worked without a cable, a short demonstration video, and the response from the seller or WiiM support.

These details may help determine whether the failures are isolated or linked to a particular batch.

Evidence & verification

Evidence basis: Multiple owner cases describing the same plugged-in versus unplugged behavior, combined with troubleshooting logic for a rechargeable remote. SoundPath Lab has not opened or electrically tested the affected units.

Firmware and versions reviewed: WiiM Voice Remote 2 hardware. The exact remote firmware, WiiM Home app version and paired-player firmware were not available for every case.

Last checked: August 7, 2026.

Limitations: The symptom is consistent with a battery, connector or power-path fault, but remote diagnosis cannot identify the failed component. Firmware or pairing behavior cannot be completely excluded without controlled testing.

Commercial disclosure: No payment or retailer relationship influenced this troubleshooting record. A replacement recommendation is based on the repeated failure pattern, not a sales link.
