UK product-safety authorities have confirmed a Bluetooth System-on-Chip vulnerability affecting specified Audio-Technica ATH-CKS50TW2 earbuds from batches produced before code 2526. The official report says a person in close proximity could take control of an affected device. Audio-Technica released firmware Rev1009 to improve security, but SoundPath Lab has not found an independent technical retest that verifies the patch, so the record remains resolved-pending-verification rather than resolved-verified.

Buyer action

If you own an ATH-CKS50TW2, open the latest Audio-Technica | Connect app and check the earbud firmware. Update to Rev1009 or later before continuing normal use. Do not install firmware intended for another model.

  • Trigger condition: An affected, unpatched device is within Bluetooth proximity of an attacker
  • Affected population: Unknown
  • Customer incident count: Not disclosed
  • Independent source count: Two primary sources — the UK regulator and Audio-Technica's official firmware notice
  • First observed: August 1, 2025, when Rev1009 became available
  • Regulatory confirmation: November 4, 2025
  • SoundPath Lab confirmation date: August 11, 2026

What the official sources confirm

The UK Office for Product Safety and Standards identifies ATH-CKS50TW2BK and ATH-CKS50TW2GR units with batch numbers before 2526. It states that the Bluetooth SoC vulnerability could enable a person in close proximity to take control of the device. The authority says Audio-Technica contacted affected customers and released firmware to patch the vulnerability.

Audio-Technica's official ATH-CKS50TW2 firmware page identifies the security update as Rev1009, available from August 1, 2025. It applies to devices running Rev1003, Rev1007 or Rev1008 and requires the latest Audio-Technica | Connect app.

Update method

  1. Install or update Audio-Technica | Connect on Android or iOS.
  2. Pair the ATH-CKS50TW2 with the phone and open the app.
  3. Follow the update notification shown for the product.
  4. Keep the phone and earbuds powered and close together until completion.
  5. Confirm that the reported device firmware is Rev1009 or later.

Audio-Technica provides separate iOS update instructions. The manufacturer says an update can take up to 15 minutes and the earbuds cannot be used during the process.

Verification status and limits

Confirmed fact: A regulator and the manufacturer acknowledge a security issue and a corrective firmware release.

Reasonable inference: Rev1009 is the corrective firmware referenced by the UK report because Audio-Technica describes it as a security improvement for the same model and released it before the regulatory notice.

Unknown: The precise vulnerability identifier, exploitation method, maximum attack distance, number of affected units, number of incidents and whether every regional colour or limited edition uses the same affected hardware revision. SoundPath Lab has not found an independent post-update penetration test.

For that reason, a manufacturer claim alone does not justify resolved-verified. This page will be updated if an independent retest, a CVE assignment, a revised batch scope or evidence of exploitation becomes available.
