Hegel introduces connected H200 and analogue-only A200 amplifiers

Hegel has announced two integrated amplifiers built around the same 150W-per-channel Class A/B platform. The H200 is the connected version, combining amplification with a DAC, network streaming, an MM phono stage and a headphone output. Its announced streaming support includes Spotify Connect Lossless, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Apple AirPlay, Google Cast, Roon Ready, UPnP, internet radio and podcasts.

The A200 uses the same core amplifier architecture but removes the digital and network sections. It is aimed at buyers who already own a preferred DAC, streamer or other analogue source. Both models use Hegel SoundEngine2, are specified for speaker loads down to 2 ohms and include a moving-magnet phono input.

The H200 is expected to ship in late August at €3,995, US$4,995 or £3,500. The A200 is scheduled for October at €3,295, US$3,995 or £2,750.

Why it matters: Hegel is separating “all-in-one” and “choose your own source” buyers without changing the amplifier platform. The key purchasing decision is therefore system architecture rather than rated power.

Astell&Kern PD5 combines switchable four- and eight-DAC modes

Astell&Kern announced the PD5 portable digital audio player on August 4. The compact player succeeds the A&norma SR35 and uses eight Cirrus Logic CS43198 DACs. Users can switch between Quad-DAC mode, intended to extend battery life, and Octa-DAC mode, intended to prioritise audio performance.

Astell&Kern quotes up to 28 hours of playback in Quad-DAC mode. Other announced features include 32-bit/384kHz PCM, native DSD256, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3, aptX HD, LDAC and LHDC. A new EnviroTune function is designed to analyse ambient noise and adjust playback settings for the listening environment.

The PD5 is scheduled for its first public demonstration at the Hong Kong High End Audio Visual Show, followed by the Shenzhen International Audio Show and CanJam SoCal. Price and retail availability were not confirmed at the time of publication.

Why it matters: the selectable DAC architecture makes battery life versus maximum conversion hardware an explicit user choice, while EnviroTune shows portable players moving beyond conventional fixed sound modes.

CMF Clip Pro brings a physical case dial to open-ear earbuds

CMF launched its first open-ear earbuds, the Clip Pro, on August 4. The US price is $99. Each earbud weighs 5.9g and uses a 10.8mm driver. The announced feature set includes LDAC, AAC and SBC, Bluetooth 5.4, multipoint connectivity, Google Fast Pair, Microsoft Swift Pair, a low-latency mode and IP54 protection.

The charging case includes a physical Smart Dial for volume, playback, calls and pairing. CMF quotes up to 10 hours of playback from the earbuds and roughly 32.5 hours including the case.

Why it matters: open-ear audio is moving rapidly from a specialist fitness format into mainstream personal audio. The physical dial is also a practical attempt to make case controls useful rather than decorative.

Hong Kong High End Audio Visual Show opens August 7

The 2026 Hong Kong High End Audio Visual Show runs from August 7 to 9 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai. Opening hours are 10:00–19:00 on Friday and Saturday and 10:00–18:00 on Sunday. A one-day ticket is listed at HK$100.

The exhibition covers Hall 3, the S2 and S4 meeting-room areas and the Chancellor Room. Confirmed show-related announcements include the public debut of the Astell&Kern PD5, demonstrations from established high-end brands and several Asia or Hong Kong product premieres.

Naim New Classic firmware 5.4 adds Presto

Naim firmware 5.4 for New Classic streaming products became available on August 5. Early reports on Naim’s official community confirm the addition of the Presto streaming service and successful installation on New Classic components including the NSC 222. Initial user discussion also indicates that a display-setting behaviour after a full power cycle may not be consistently resolved on every system.

WiiM began a staged rollout of Sub Pro firmware 5.2.825340 on August 5. The release note identifies one fix: an issue that could prevent the WiiM Sub Pro from entering standby mode. An early owner response in the same official forum thread reports that the update resolved the problem on that unit.

Why it matters: this is a narrow update, but it addresses power behaviour rather than an optional feature. Owners affected by the standby problem should verify the installed firmware version because WiiM rolls updates out sequentially.
