Beyerdynamic AVENTHO Y prioritises repairability and battery life

Beyerdynamic's AVENTHO Y is a closed-back wireless over-ear headphone with active noise cancellation, Bluetooth 6.0 multipoint, USB-C and app-based sound personalisation. The official North American product page lists a US price of $149.99 and four colours.

The most important ownership detail is not a codec or an AI feature: the battery is user-replaceable, the ear cushions are interchangeable and the aluminium-yoke design is intended to keep high-wear components serviceable. Beyerdynamic rates battery life at more than 90 hours without ANC and more than 60 hours with ANC. The headphones weigh 316 g and support SBC and AAC; aptX and LDAC are not listed.

What this means for buyers: AVENTHO Y is unusually repair-oriented for a mainstream wireless ANC headphone at this price. That could reduce replacement pressure when the battery ages, but buyers who prioritise lighter weight or higher-bandwidth Bluetooth codecs should compare the 316 g mass and SBC/AAC-only specification against alternatives. Battery endurance and ANC quality remain manufacturer claims until independently tested.

Soundcore expands its Thus AI call platform to three new form factors

Soundcore's September 3 launch page introduces the AeroClip 2 open-ear clip earbuds, Space 2 Pro over-ear headphones and Liberty Buds 2 true-wireless earbuds, with a stated launch day of September 22 on the US page.

AeroClip 2 uses a 12 mm dual-magnetic high-excursion driver and an open-ear C-bridge design intended to preserve environmental awareness. Space 2 Pro adds Adaptive ANC 3.0, LDAC wireless audio, wired high-resolution playback and HearID personalisation. Liberty Buds 2 combines adaptive ANC with HearID 5.0 and a lightweight bean-shaped in-ear design.

Soundcore says its Anker Thus AI chip improves call isolation through neural-network compute-in-memory processing. The company also states that the chip offers 150 times the computing power of its previous flagship earbud chip. Soundcore explicitly identifies that comparison as an internal laboratory claim, so it should not be treated as independent evidence of call quality.

What this means for buyers: The range covers open-ear awareness, over-ear work use and compact in-ear ANC under one call-focused platform. However, the current launch page is still partly promotional: full regional prices, detailed codec support for every model, IP ratings and real-world call performance need product-level confirmation. Buyers should wait for final regional store pages before comparing value.

Belkin adds SoundForm Isolate Buds, Dot and Play

Belkin's official IFA release adds three lower-cost products. SoundForm Isolate Buds are rated for up to 45 dB of hybrid ANC, 32 hours of total battery life, Bluetooth multipoint and IPX5 resistance. Belkin lists $59.99 in the US, £39.99 in the UK and €49.99 in Europe, with availability beginning in September 2026.

SoundForm Dot is offered with or without ANC and is positioned as a compact everyday earbud. SoundForm Play is an over-ear model for children aged five and older, with an optional 85 dB volume limiter and Focus Boost soundscapes. The volume limiter is optional rather than permanently enforced, which parents should understand before treating it as a complete hearing-protection control.

What this means for buyers: Belkin is pushing ANC and multipoint into lower price tiers, but published cancellation depth, battery life and call quality remain manufacturer specifications. For the children's model, fit, supervision and the actual limiter state matter more than the presence of a “kids” label.

Apple AirPods 5 makes ANC standard across both versions

Apple introduced AirPods 5 in two US configurations, both with Active Noise Cancellation: $129 with a USB-C charging case, and $149 with a wireless charging case. Apple lists availability from September 18, 2026.

The $149 version adds volume swipe, one extra hour of ANC battery life (up to five hours versus four), Qi and Apple Watch charging, and a case speaker for Find My. Both use an open-ear design, H2, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, IP57 resistance and Live Translation, but neither includes the Hearing Test, Hearing Aid or Hearing Protection features listed for AirPods Pro 3.

What this means for buyers: ANC is no longer the reason to choose the higher-priced AirPods 5. The $20 step-up buys charging convenience, on-stem volume control, longer endurance and a more findable case. Buyers who need Apple hearing-health features should still compare AirPods Pro 3 rather than assuming they are included.

Audio-Technica ATH-AL5NC brings wireless convenience to an open-back design

Audio-Technica's ATH-AL5NC is a wireless open-back over-ear headphone listed at €249 on the company's European store. It uses 53 mm dynamic drivers, weighs approximately 240 g and supports Bluetooth 5.3 multipoint with LDAC, AAC and SBC. Audio-Technica rates battery life at up to 75 hours with noise reduction off and 50 hours with it enabled.

The unusual part is the combination of open housings with a noise-reduction function and a sound-leakage prevention mode. Those controls do not turn the ATH-AL5NC into a closed-back commuting headphone: Audio-Technica explicitly warns that leakage remains audible at higher volume. The company also includes a 3.5 mm cable with an inline microphone for wired use.

What this means for buyers: the ATH-AL5NC removes the cable from a product category normally built for quiet rooms, but it does not remove the defining trade-off of an open-back design. It may suit home listening, work and gaming where airflow and awareness matter; buyers needing strong public-transport isolation or low leakage should still compare closed-back ANC models. Noise reduction, leakage control, comfort and endurance remain manufacturer claims until independently tested.

Sony revives the folding XM4 design as the WH-1000XM4C

Sony's US store identifies the WH-1000XM4C as a new “M4 2nd Gen” model and lists it for pre-order at $299.99. The official support page dates the model documentation to September 7, 2026. Sony keeps the familiar folding shape, lists three colours, an approximate weight of 253 g and up to 27 hours of playback.

This is a refresh of the XM4 idea, not a claim that it replaces the flagship WH-1000XM6. Sony's current product material emphasises 1000X-series noise cancelling, updated sound customisation and the established portable design. The published 27-hour figure is also lower than the original WH-1000XM4's official maximum of 30 hours, so buyers should not assume that every numerical specification improved.

What this means for buyers: the WH-1000XM4C gives shoppers who prefer the compact XM4 chassis a new, supported purchase path below Sony's current flagship tier. Its value depends on real ANC, call, battery and sound comparisons against discounted XM4/XM5 stock and the XM6; the model name and familiar shell do not establish performance parity with any of them.

Buying takeaway

AirPods 5 has the clearest mainstream ecosystem impact because both versions include ANC. Sony's WH-1000XM4C is the most recognisable value-tier refresh, but its familiar chassis should not substitute for direct XM4/XM5/XM6 comparisons. ATH-AL5NC is the most unusual format choice and suits quiet-space buyers more than commuters. AVENTHO Y retains the strongest long-term ownership differentiator because its battery and pads are replaceable. Soundcore has the most ambitious call-processing claims but also the largest verification gap, while Belkin competes primarily on accessibility and price. None should be ranked by announcement claims alone; the next useful step is product-page verification followed by independent tests and owner evidence.
