Audio Industry Briefing: Marantz MCR 60n, Schiit Bifrost 3 and iFi iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 — September 10–14, 2026
Marantz MCR 60n reduces box count, Schiit Bifrost 3 adds a modular upgrade path, and iFi PHANTOM 1.5 spans IEMs to electrostatics. Buyer impact and limits.
Marantz, Schiit and iFi have updated three very different system paths: a compact all-in-one receiver, an upgradeable desktop DAC and a flagship headphone amplifier that also drives electrostatic headphones. The practical question is not which product is “best,” but whether each one removes enough boxes or compatibility uncertainty to justify buying now.

Marantz MCR 60n combines streaming, CD, phono and TV audio
Marantz’s new MCR 60n is a compact integrated system built around 65W + 65W into 4 ohms. It combines HEOS streaming, an integrated CD player, HDMI eARC, an MM phono input, AirPlay 2, Bluetooth transmission to headphones, a subwoofer output and rear USB-A playback. The official specification also lists a four-channel 33W mode, Speaker A/B operation, bi-amping and Dirac Live upgradability.
The hardware is unusually broad for a single small chassis. Marantz lists PCM playback up to 384kHz/32-bit and DSD 11.2MHz through supported network or USB formats. The DAB version adds radio-market relevance in supported regions, while availability and price differ by country.
There is one important documentation conflict. The product narrative and specification table say Roon Ready, but the same official page displays a Roon Tested badge. Those are not equivalent certifications. Buyers who need native Roon endpoint support should verify the model in Roon’s current partner/device list or obtain written confirmation from Marantz before relying on that feature. The official page also says “Dirac Live Upgradability” without fully explaining licence cost, supported filter scope or launch timing.
What this means for buyers: MCR 60n is most compelling when it replaces several boxes—streamer, CD player, phono stage and TV amplifier—in a compact room. It is less compelling if you already own a capable HEOS amplifier or need higher sustained power for difficult speakers. Do not buy specifically for Roon or Dirac until the certification and implementation details are consistent.

Schiit Bifrost 3 changes platform direction while preserving an upgrade path
Schiit’s Bifrost 3 is available for preorder with an expected end-of-October 2026 shipment. The full price is $699 in black or $729 in silver; the $10 preorder deposit is applied to the purchase. It replaces the Bifrost 2 family’s True Multibit conversion with Schiit’s Mesh architecture, using a SHARC DSP and an ESS ES9039 as the delta-sigma modulator.
The new model adds USB-C Unison 384 input, balanced XLR and single-ended RCA outputs, a modular input/DAC-card design, an included IR remote and Forkbeard control. Forkbeard can add volume, balance, loudness, parametric EQ and over-the-air firmware updates, so Bifrost 3 can act as a DAC, digital preamp and EQ rather than only a source component. Schiit specifies USB capability up to 32-bit/384kHz and coaxial/optical up to 24-bit/192kHz.
Existing Bifrost 2 owners do not need to replace the entire DAC to obtain Mesh conversion. Schiit lists a user-installable B3 Mesh card at $250, expected at the end of October, with an SD-card firmware update. However, Bifrost 2 cannot be upgraded to Forkbeard because that requires the Bifrost 3 motherboard and chassis changes. Bifrost 3 can also accept the earlier Bifrost 2 analogue cards.
What this means for buyers: New buyers get a lower entry price than the outgoing $799 Bifrost 2/64 while gaining preamp, EQ and remote-control functions. Current Bifrost 2 owners should separate two decisions: a $250 conversion-card update may be enough if they only want Mesh, while Forkbeard requires a new Bifrost 3. Because this is still a preorder, shipping timing, final firmware maturity and any sonic advantage over Bifrost 2/64 remain unverified.

iFi iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 broadens one-box headphone compatibility
iFi announced the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 on September 14. The reference headphone amplifier combines switchable solid-state and matched GE 5670 tube input stages, including a Tube+ mode, with an integrated iESL electrostatic energizer rated for bias voltages up to 640V. iFi lists a UK price of £3,749.
The revised model expands gain selection to 0dB, 12dB and 24dB, compared with 0dB, 9dB and 18dB on the original PHANTOM. Manufacturer specifications list more than 15,000mW maximum balanced output into 16 ohms, more than 5,760mW single-ended into 16 ohms and more than 27V balanced into 600 ohms. IEMatch attenuation reaches 12dB single-ended and 24dB balanced. These are iFi laboratory specifications, not SoundPath Lab measurements.
Version 1.5 also adds VU meters, a redesigned interface, a buffered volume control intended to feel smoother and an anti-fingerprint finish. The Nexis app is used for remote control, naming, diagnostics, reset functions, over-the-air firmware and real-time tube-health information. App dependence and OTA support create useful ownership tools, but their long-term reliability has not yet been independently established.
What this means for buyers: The PHANTOM 1.5 makes the strongest case for collectors who move between sensitive IEMs, dynamic headphones, low-impedance planars and electrostatics and would otherwise maintain several amplifiers. Original PHANTOM owners should not assume they need to upgrade: the practical gains are the wider gain range, improved low-level control, interface changes and richer Nexis monitoring. Buyers with one conventional headphone can spend far less without losing the basic amplification function.

Buying takeaway
Marantz offers the broadest box-count reduction for a living-room system. Schiit offers the clearest lower-cost upgrade path because Bifrost 2 owners can add the Mesh card without replacing the whole DAC. iFi offers the widest headphone-type compatibility, but only specialist collections are likely to justify its price.
None of these announcements is a SoundPath Lab hands-on test. Buyers should decide first whether they need fewer boxes, a modular DAC platform or one amplifier for multiple headphone classes. If the new feature does not solve a current compatibility or system-design problem, keeping the existing system is the lower-risk choice.
