WiiM Bar vs Sonos Beam (Gen 2): $479, HDMI eARC and AirPlay Trade-offs

WiiM Bar has HDMI eARC; video passthrough and AirPlay are separate decisions. A source-based Beam Gen 2 comparison, without invented listening results.

Choose between WiiM Bar and Sonos Beam (Gen 2) by your TV connections, Apple playback needs and existing ecosystem. WiiM lists its Bar at $479. It has HDMI eARC for TV audio return; the limitation is the absence of a separate HDMI video passthrough path. Beam is also not a video-switching soundbar.

Documentation checked 23 October 2026. No SPL listening comparison, room measurement, latency test or controlled reliability comparison has been performed. Sound quality and actual TV/CEC behavior remain Pending verification. “Sonos” here means Beam (Gen 2), not every Sonos soundbar.

ARC is present; video passthrough is a different connection

With WiiM Bar, connect the console or media player to the TV, then connect the TV’s ARC/eARC socket to the Bar. The Bar is not a switch through which a video source connects onward to the TV. If your TV is short of HDMI sockets or cannot pass your source format, the television becomes the compatibility limit.

Sonos Beam’s guide also describes a TV HDMI ARC/eARC connection (or the appropriate optical-adapter route). Do not buy Beam on the assumption that it adds a separate video passthrough input. Check the exact TV and source format in either system; a specification logo alone cannot confirm that your TV passes it.

The Apple workflow can decide the shortlist

If selecting the speaker directly from an iPhone AirPlay menu is essential, Beam’s documented AirPlay 2 path is the clearer match. Do not treat Google Cast, Bluetooth, a service’s Connect feature and AirPlay as interchangeable workflows. Confirm which phone app actually exposes the playback route you use before choosing WiiM Bar.

As checked on 23 October 2026, WiiM’s AirPlay compatibility list names the supported and unsupported devices but does not name Bar in either group. The Bar product page also does not establish AirPlay support. Bar’s AirPlay status therefore remains Pending verification; this is a documentation gap, not a verified exclusion or hardware defect. If AirPlay is essential, choose an explicitly documented option or obtain exact-model confirmation before buying. Do not purchase on a promise of a future update.

What $479 does and does not buy

$479 is the checked US manufacturer Bar list price, not a complete surround-system budget, a guaranteed checkout offer or a matched Sonos price. Additional surrounds, a subwoofer and any installation costs need their own current regional quotes. We do not insert an unverified Sonos price to manufacture a savings figure.

The checked WiiM page shows both an “available on Amazon” banner and “Coming Soon” copy, so it does not by itself settle current regional fulfillment. Confirm actual stock and delivery with the seller. WiiM describes a 3.0.2 bar with RoomFit and possible expansion to 5.1.2. That is a documented configuration claim, not proof of convincing height effects in your room. Driver count, maximum power and codec lists are not a substitute for testing dialogue, tonal balance or overhead localization.

Who should choose which?

  • Shortlist WiiM Bar when the exact WiiM services/control workflow suits you, the TV can provide the needed audio path, and AirPlay is not a requirement.
  • Shortlist Beam (Gen 2) when its documented Apple workflow or your already compatible Sonos system matters more than a speculative price/performance comparison.
  • Keep the existing soundbar or AVR when it already handles your sources, dialogue and control reliably, or when either new option would remove a required input.
  • Look beyond both if you require a separate HDMI video input/passthrough, or cannot establish your TV’s format compatibility.

Verify before the return window closes

Try cold start, HDMI input switching, TV remote volume, mute, CEC wake/sleep, dialogue at low level, lip-sync, the actual streaming apps and reconnecting after a router restart. Keep a record of TV model/firmware, source settings, Bar/Beam firmware and control-app version. Optical fallback has different format limits; do not assume it preserves the same Atmos path.
