RME ADI-2 Pro FS R Black Edition
A two-channel professional AD/DA converter with USB, DSP and headphone monitoring; retain the FS R Black Edition identity rather than merging it with Pro EX or ADI-2/4.
Evidence checked / updated: 2026-10-11. Manufacturer claims and editorial system-fit assessment. No SoundPath Lab listening or measurement test.
Verified documentation
- Analogue paths: Stereo balanced XLR/TRS line inputs, XLR and rear TRS line outputs, two 6.35mm stereo headphone outputs. These are line inputs, not microphone preamps or a phono stage.
- Digital and DSP: USB 2.0 class-compliant audio; AES/EBU and coaxial/optical S/PDIF I/O, with documented ADAT handling. USB PCM up to 768kHz and DSD modes; input, routing and DSP restrictions apply. Windows ASIO uses the matching RME driver.
- Headphone conditions: Manufacturer 32Ω test point: 1.2W at +18dBu, THD -110dB. Ordinary outputs are unbalanced stereo. Advanced balanced mode uses the specified two-socket wiring; do not confuse two headphone jacks with universal balanced connectors.
Best for
Users needing line-level recording, a computer interface and detailed monitoring/DSP routing in one box.
Avoid if
You only need simple digital playback, microphone gain, direct guitar input, a phono stage or speaker power amplification.
Limits and unknowns
Routing, reference levels, hardware-specific firmware and balanced-headphone wiring add complexity. Two analogue inputs do not make this a multichannel microphone interface. Actual latency and stability depend on the host setup and remain untested.
Current verdict
A two-channel professional AD/DA converter with USB, DSP and headphone monitoring; retain the FS R Black Edition identity rather than merging it with Pro EX or ADI-2/4.
Why it fits
Users needing line-level recording, a computer interface and detailed monitoring/DSP routing in one box.
What it can replace
A compatible existing device performing this documented role, when a real connection or workflow requirement is missing. Check downstream levels, space and total system cost before replacing it.
What it cannot replace
You only need simple digital playback, microphone gain, direct guitar input, a phono stage or speaker power amplification.
What SoundPath Lab tested
Official model documentation and the linked manual were reviewed. No SoundPath Lab unit was listened to, measured, installed or firmware-retested for this revision. L2 identifies decision coverage, not independent testing or a product score.
What remains untested
Actual sound, electrical or acoustic performance, unit variation, compatibility in the proposed system, long-term reliability and remedy outcomes remain untested. Owner cases were not collected in this revision. Manufacturer specifications must not be treated as SPL results.
System conditions
Add separate microphone or phono preamplification when needed. Match input headroom and output level, choose the USB channel/routing mode deliberately and use only the manual-specified balanced cable wiring. Identify the hardware revision before updating.
Alternatives by need
ADI-2 DAC FS is simpler for playback-only use; ADI-2 FS fits standalone digital conversion without USB. Keep an existing interface when its conversion, inputs and routing already satisfy the job.
Keep or upgrade
Keep working equipment if it meets these requirements. Upgrade for a missing function, appropriate physical fit or a documented system constraint; no audible superiority is established here. Audition or validate the intended chain before committing to a replacement.
When to reassess
Reassess after revised official specifications, hardware configuration changes, a relevant verified issue, support withdrawal or independently accepted tests. A routine product-page edit does not justify a maturity change or issue closure.
Ownership evidence
Long-term ownership evidence is pending; no six-month listening, durability or reliability result is claimed.
Firmware, manual and support
Official product pages link manuals, driver/flash tools and ADI-2 Remote where applicable. Use the tool and manual for the exact hardware revision; do not copy firmware from the Pro EX or another ADI-2 variant. Optional software control does not imply a subscription. Guaranteed support duration and local repair terms remain Unknown.
Current local price, stock, regional warranty terms, repair lead time and guaranteed future support period are Unknown. An accessible official page is not evidence of local stock. Confirm the exact offer and service terms before purchase.
