RME ADI-2 DAC FS

Decision Profile · L2 · documentation + editorial inference

RME ADI-2 DAC FS

A playback DAC, headphone/IEM amplifier and variable line-output controller with onboard DSP; it has no analogue recording input and is distinct from ADI-2 Pro and ADI-2 FS.

Evidence checked / updated: 2026-10-11. Manufacturer claims and editorial system-fit assessment. No SoundPath Lab listening or measurement test.

Verified documentation

  • Input / output: USB 2.0 audio, optical and coaxial S/PDIF inputs; balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA line outputs; 6.35mm phones and 3.5mm IEM outputs. Digital input can be routed to USB recording; this is not analogue ADC capability.
  • Formats and DSP: USB PCM up to 768kHz and DSD playback; optical/coaxial limits and DSD/DSP mode restrictions must follow the manual. Five-band parametric EQ, loudness and crossfeed are documented. Windows ASIO uses the RME driver; USB Class Compliant use is documented for compatible hosts.
  • Headphone rating: Manufacturer example: 1.2W into 32Ω at +18dBu, THD -120dB; output impedance 0.1Ω. This is a specified test point, not an independent load sweep.
  • Revision boundary: Current page identifies ES9028Q2M; older unchanged-name hardware uses other DAC silicon. Keep the stable product ID, document the actual unit revision, and do not assign current electrical numbers to every old unit. The page RCA spec row incorrectly says TS jack; the manual/rear connector identify RCA.

Best for

A computer or digital transport feeding headphones, sensitive IEMs or an active-speaker chain where local EQ and safe volume control solve a real need.

Avoid if

You need analogue capture, microphone gain, a network streamer, phono equalisation or direct passive-speaker drive.

Limits and unknowns

Menu setup and output-level matching matter. High sample-rate support is input/mode dependent; DSD bypass modes restrict DSP. Hardware revisions and webpage connector wording require manual cross-checks.

Current verdict

A playback DAC, headphone/IEM amplifier and variable line-output controller with onboard DSP; it has no analogue recording input and is distinct from ADI-2 Pro and ADI-2 FS.

Why it fits

A computer or digital transport feeding headphones, sensitive IEMs or an active-speaker chain where local EQ and safe volume control solve a real need.

What it can replace

A compatible existing device performing this documented role, when a real connection or workflow requirement is missing. Check downstream levels, space and total system cost before replacing it.

What it cannot replace

You need analogue capture, microphone gain, a network streamer, phono equalisation or direct passive-speaker drive.

What SoundPath Lab tested

Official model documentation and the linked manual were reviewed. No SoundPath Lab unit was listened to, measured, installed or firmware-retested for this revision. L2 identifies decision coverage, not independent testing or a product score.

What remains untested

Actual sound, electrical or acoustic performance, unit variation, compatibility in the proposed system, long-term reliability and remedy outcomes remain untested. Owner cases were not collected in this revision. Manufacturer specifications must not be treated as SPL results.

System conditions

Use variable output for a downstream chain lacking volume control; begin at low level. Choose IEM versus phones output appropriately. Match Windows driver and firmware to the exact unit, and verify the selected DSP mode before relying on EQ.

Alternatives by need

ADI-2 Pro FS R adds analogue conversion and studio routing; ADI-2 FS is a standalone converter without USB audio. Keep an adequate simpler DAC if DSP and these output paths are unnecessary.

Keep or upgrade

Keep working equipment if it meets these requirements. Upgrade for a missing function, appropriate physical fit or a documented system constraint; no audible superiority is established here. Audition or validate the intended chain before committing to a replacement.

When to reassess

Reassess after revised official specifications, hardware configuration changes, a relevant verified issue, support withdrawal or independently accepted tests. A routine product-page edit does not justify a maturity change or issue closure.

Ownership evidence

Long-term ownership evidence is pending; no six-month listening, durability or reliability result is claimed.

Firmware, manual and support

Official product pages link manuals, driver/flash tools and ADI-2 Remote where applicable. Use the tool and manual for the exact hardware revision; do not copy firmware from the Pro EX or another ADI-2 variant. Optional software control does not imply a subscription. Guaranteed support duration and local repair terms remain Unknown.

Current local price, stock, regional warranty terms, repair lead time and guaranteed future support period are Unknown. An accessible official page is not evidence of local stock. Confirm the exact offer and service terms before purchase.

Official model manual

Unresolved source conflicts

  • The official page RCA specification row says 6.3mm TS, while the model manual and rear-panel connector identify RCA. Use the manual for connection choice; the conflicting row is retained for audit.
