RME ADI-2 FS
A standalone two-channel analogue/digital and format converter for existing S/PDIF, AES-compatible or ADAT systems; it has no USB audio interface.
Evidence checked / updated: 2026-10-11. Manufacturer claims and editorial system-fit assessment. No SoundPath Lab listening or measurement test.
Verified documentation
- Connections: Balanced XLR/TRS combo line inputs; balanced XLR and jack line outputs; coaxial and optical digital input/output; 6.3mm headphone output. AES compatibility uses the documented coaxial adapter arrangement, not a dedicated AES XLR socket.
- Format limits: Two-channel conversion up to 192kHz. ADAT S/MUX carries 8/4/2 channels at 48/96/192kHz, but this device has only two analogue channels; it is not an eight-channel ADC.
- Level and power: Switchable reference levels +4/+13/+19dBu at 0dBFS; ADC maximum +19dBu. Phones: 0.7W/channel into 32Ω at 0.01% THD, 0.1Ω output impedance. External 9–15V supply; use the supplied compatible PSU.
Best for
A studio or hi-fi system already having compatible digital I/O and needing two-channel conversion or a digital-format bridge.
Avoid if
You need direct computer USB recording, microphone preamps, onboard parametric EQ, multichannel analogue conversion or network audio.
Limits and unknowns
Clock source, channel mapping and reference levels must be aligned. ADAT channel capacity does not expand the analogue converter count. A USB cable cannot turn this model into an interface.
Current verdict
A standalone two-channel analogue/digital and format converter for existing S/PDIF, AES-compatible or ADAT systems; it has no USB audio interface.
Why it fits
A studio or hi-fi system already having compatible digital I/O and needing two-channel conversion or a digital-format bridge.
What it can replace
A compatible existing device performing this documented role, when a real connection or workflow requirement is missing. Check downstream levels, space and total system cost before replacing it.
What it cannot replace
You need direct computer USB recording, microphone preamps, onboard parametric EQ, multichannel analogue conversion or network audio.
What SoundPath Lab tested
Official model documentation and the linked manual were reviewed. No SoundPath Lab unit was listened to, measured, installed or firmware-retested for this revision. L2 identifies decision coverage, not independent testing or a product score.
What remains untested
Actual sound, electrical or acoustic performance, unit variation, compatibility in the proposed system, long-term reliability and remedy outcomes remain untested. Owner cases were not collected in this revision. Manufacturer specifications must not be treated as SPL results.
System conditions
Use line-level sources, select one appropriate clock master and match optical format/sample rate at both ends. For computer capture add an existing compatible digital interface. Validate input headroom and monitor level before recording.
Alternatives by need
ADI-2 Pro FS R is the alternative when USB and studio DSP are required; ADI-2 DAC FS suits playback without analogue input. None is interchangeable solely because its name starts ADI-2.
Keep or upgrade
Keep working equipment if it meets these requirements. Upgrade for a missing function, appropriate physical fit or a documented system constraint; no audible superiority is established here. Audition or validate the intended chain before committing to a replacement.
When to reassess
Reassess after revised official specifications, hardware configuration changes, a relevant verified issue, support withdrawal or independently accepted tests. A routine product-page edit does not justify a maturity change or issue closure.
Ownership evidence
Long-term ownership evidence is pending; no six-month listening, durability or reliability result is claimed.
Firmware, manual and support
The official 2019 model manual describes front-panel standalone operation. No user firmware version or required app/subscription is established for this model in this review. Use the model-specific manual; do not apply the USB Pro/DAC updater to ADI-2 FS. Local warranty and support horizon are Unknown.
Current local price, stock, regional warranty terms, repair lead time and guaranteed future support period are Unknown. An accessible official page is not evidence of local stock. Confirm the exact offer and service terms before purchase.
