Pro-Ject X1 B

An adjustable belt-drive turntable with RCA and 5-pin mini-XLR phono outputs. Current Pick it PRO Balanced MM and earlier Pick it S2 MM packages must be distinguished before planning a balanced chain.

Evidence checked / updated: 2026-10-11. Manufacturer claims and editorial system-fit assessment. No SoundPath Lab listening or measurement test.

Verified documentation

  • Drive / arm / platter: 33/45rpm electronic change; 78rpm requires changing to the round belt and a shellac-appropriate stylus/cartridge. 8.6in carbon/aluminium arm, adjustable VTA/azimuth; 1.5kg, 20mm acrylic platter.
  • Phono outputs: RCA plus 5-pin mini-XLR, both before phono equalisation. Balanced operation needs a suitable cartridge, correct balanced phono cable and matching balanced phono input; a mini-XLR socket alone is insufficient.
  • Current / earlier package: Current official information specifies Pick it PRO Balanced, a special MM cartridge designed for this path. Earlier Pick it S2 MM packages need a suitable replacement for True Balanced operation. Inspect the actual package.
  • Size / power: 415 × 125 × 335mm W/H/D, 7kg net; 15V/0.8A DC supply, maximum 5W, standby under 0.3W.

Best for

A vinyl user prepared to set tracking force/alignment and deliberately build a compatible balanced or conventional phono chain.

Avoid if

You need automation, a built-in phono stage, digital/wireless output or balanced operation with any ordinary MM cartridge.

Limits and unknowns

The arm and cartridge need competent setup. Balanced cables and phono stage are additional system requirements. No measured noise reduction or sonic improvement is established by this review.

Current verdict

An adjustable belt-drive turntable with RCA and 5-pin mini-XLR phono outputs. Current Pick it PRO Balanced MM and earlier Pick it S2 MM packages must be distinguished before planning a balanced chain.

Why it fits

A vinyl user prepared to set tracking force/alignment and deliberately build a compatible balanced or conventional phono chain.

What it can replace

An adjustable manual turntable where arm adjustment or a documented balanced phono route is required; it does not replace a phono preamp.

What it cannot replace

You need automation, a built-in phono stage, digital/wireless output or balanced operation with any ordinary MM cartridge.

What SoundPath Lab tested

Official model documentation and the listed sources were reviewed. No SoundPath Lab unit was listened to, measured, installed or firmware-retested. L2 is complete decision coverage, not independent test acceptance or a score.

What remains untested

Actual sound, noise, output limits, room response or digital compatibility, unit variation and long-term reliability remain untested. No owner case or fix outcome was independently assessed in this revision.

System conditions

Identify the fitted cartridge and match phono gain/loading. Use the manual for belt changes, alignment, VTA and azimuth. Do not connect low-level phono output directly to a line input; do not infer MC gain is appropriate for the special balanced MM.

Alternatives by need

E1.2 is simpler for a conventional MM system; A1.2 prioritises automation. Debut PRO B is another balanced-capable documented option: compare cartridge configuration, setup and cost, not assumed audible performance.

Keep or upgrade

Keep an existing system that already meets these conditions. Upgrade only to solve a specific missing connection, operating requirement or physical constraint. Validate the intended chain before purchase; the documented differences do not establish audible superiority.

When to reassess

Review after a material official specification/configuration change, relevant verified issue, support withdrawal or accepted independent testing. Do not close an issue or infer a maturity change from routine marketing edits.

Ownership evidence

Long-term ownership evidence is pending. No six-month durability or reliability result is claimed.

Firmware, manual and support

The exact model manual was reviewed for signal routing, cartridge setup and maintenance. No user firmware, required control app or subscription is documented for analogue playback. Confirm stylus/cartridge service, shipping protection and warranty with the authorised local distributor.

Current local price, stock, regional warranty, spare parts and guaranteed support horizon remain Unknown. Current official documentation does not prove authorised local stock or a launch/shipping date. Confirm the offer and service terms for the exact configuration.

Unresolved source conflicts

  • The live page mixes a new Pick it PRO Balanced MM package with older Pick it S2 MM wording and an older MC-upgrade instruction. The current information PDF explicitly permits the special balanced MM. Preserve the package distinction; do not state that every MM is balanced or that MC is universally mandatory.
