Pro-Ject Debut PRO B

A manual belt-drive turntable with a factory-fitted Pick it PRO Balanced moving-magnet cartridge, RCA phono output and balanced mini-XLR phono output. A balanced system needs matching external components.

Evidence checked / updated: 2026-10-11. Manufacturer claims and editorial system-fit assessment. No SoundPath Lab listening or measurement test.

Verified documentation

  • Drive / speed: Belt drive; electronic 33/45 rpm selection. 78 rpm needs the supplied round belt installed on the larger pulley position; it is not a third speed-switch setting with the standard belt.
  • Cartridge loading: Pick it PRO Balanced MM: 4 mV at 1 kHz; recommended 2.0 g tracking force, 47 kohms and 150–300 pF. Manufacturer specifications, not SPL cartridge measurements.
  • Tonearm / setup: 8.6-inch carbon/aluminium arm with adjustable VTA and azimuth; tracking force and anti-skating need correct setup. Original cartridge azimuth is factory adjusted.
  • Phono outputs: RCA and mini-XLR carry cartridge-level signals, not line level. RCA can feed a matching MM phono input. Balanced operation needs the appropriate cable and balanced phono stage, sold separately.
  • Specification boundary: Official speed variance: ±0.40% at 33 rpm and ±0.50% at 45 rpm; wow/flutter ±0.16% / ±0.14%. Measurement standard and weighting are unspecified; no comparative performance verdict is assigned.

Best for

A listener comfortable with manual cueing and cartridge setup, with a matching MM phono stage. Particularly relevant when building an actual balanced phono chain rather than buying balanced connectors alone.

Avoid if

Automatic-operation buyers or a system that only accepts line-level input without a phono stage. A stock 78 rpm belt does not confirm the supplied LP stylus suits shellac records; verify a suitable cartridge/stylus separately.

Limits and unknowns

No integrated phono preamplifier is documented. Balanced cable and stage add system cost. Isolation, hum, tracking and measured speed stability depend on the actual installation and remain untested.

Current verdict

Conditional fit for an adjustable manual deck with a planned MM or balanced phono system.

Why it fits

The specific purchase case is its cartridge/output configuration and adjustable setup. Documentation does not establish better sound or reduced hum in an untested room.

What it can replace

A manual turntable source within a matching cartridge-level phono chain.

What it cannot replace

A phono preamplifier, line-level digital source, automatic tonearm mechanism, power amplifier or guaranteed hum-free installation.

What SoundPath Lab tested

Documentation review only. No SoundPath Lab listening, measurements, setup or long-term ownership test has been performed.

What remains untested

Speed/wow/flutter, rumble, cartridge alignment and tracking, room vibration, hum rejection, listening comparison and durability.

System conditions

Use a phono stage compatible with the supplied MM cartridge and its load requirements. Never connect directly to a normal AUX/CD line input. For balanced playback verify cartridge wiring, the correct mini-XLR cable and the phono-stage input; a connector adapter alone does not create that system.

Alternatives by need

Compare Pro-Ject X1 B if its different chassis, platter and bearing design fit the setup. Keep a well-set-up existing turntable when its cartridge and phono chain already meet the need; no sonic ranking is implied.

Keep or upgrade

Budget the whole phono chain and setup tools before upgrading. Balanced connectors alone are insufficient evidence of an improvement; diagnose existing hum and alignment first.

When to reassess

Reassess with a different cartridge, revised manufacturer documentation, local service evidence or unit-level installation/measurement results.

Ownership evidence

No SoundPath Lab long-term ownership evidence is attached. This is a documentation-based reassessment.

Firmware, manual and support

Official FAQ dates Debut PRO B to 2024 and the original Debut PRO to 2021; these remain distinct configurations. The checked manual is revision 2024-06-27, not a fresh release date. Warranty and replacement-part availability remain region-specific unknowns. No user firmware is applicable to this analogue turntable.

Current regional price, stock, warranty duration, repair coverage and guaranteed support horizon are Unknown. Confirm the exact regional offer before buying. A live product page does not establish stock or a support commitment.

Official model manual

Unresolved source conflicts

  • Official webpage dimensions are 415 × 113 × 320 mm; the manual specifies 415 × 118 × 320 mm. Height remains unresolved; confirm clearance with the exact regional unit/manual rather than silently selecting one figure.
