Chord Electronics Hugo 2

A battery DAC/headphone amplifier with digital volume, filters and crossfeed; it also feeds a line-level system.

Evidence checked / updated: 2026-10-11. Manufacturer claims and editorial system-fit assessment. No SoundPath Lab listening or measurement test.

Verified documentation

  • USB input: Micro-USB audio: PCM to 32-bit/768 kHz, native DSD512 with the required host path.
  • Other digital inputs: Optical, 3.5 mm digital coaxial including dual-data operation, and aptX Bluetooth. Port ceilings differ; see the optical conflict.
  • Analogue outputs: RCA, 3.5 mm and 6.35 mm headphones; 3 V line-level mode is not a headphone listening preset.
  • Manufacturer power: Manual: 740 mW/33 ohms and 94 mW/300 ohms at clipping defined as 1% distortion. These are not SPL tests.

Best for

portable headphone use plus an existing line-level stereo system

Avoid if

You need a standalone Wi-Fi streamer, speaker power amplifier, or balanced headphone architecture.

Limits and unknowns

Battery maintenance, color-coded controls and safe line-mode operation matter. Wireless network playback requires separate equipment such as the optional 2go.

Current verdict

Conditional shortlist for portable headphone use plus an existing line-level stereo system. The recommendation depends on the documented system conditions, not an independent sound-quality ranking.

Why it fits

A battery DAC/headphone amplifier with digital volume, filters and crossfeed; it also feeds a line-level system. This assessment is an editorial inference from the documented topology.

What it can replace

Can consolidate the functions stated in the profile when the source, load and control path meet the conditions below. The useful replacement is a function or connection gap, rather than an assumed improvement in sound.

What it cannot replace

You need a standalone Wi-Fi streamer, speaker power amplifier, or balanced headphone architecture.

What SoundPath Lab tested

SoundPath Lab checked primary-source model identity, the stated interfaces and conditions, and this decision profile. No device was listened to, measured, installed, firmware-retested or endurance-tested for this review.

What remains untested

Actual sound preference, noise with your headphones or speakers, software behavior, room results, connection stability and long-term reliability remain untested. Manufacturer measurements below are not SPL measurements.

System conditions

Match the actual USB driver and playback method. Remove headphones before enabling 3 V line mode and use downstream volume control. Coaxial dual-data wiring is not an ordinary analogue AUX cable.

Alternatives by need

Mojo 2 is the smaller DSP-oriented alternative; Qutest suits a fixed desktop DAC role but cannot replace the headphone amplifier.

Keep or upgrade

Keep a working system if it already provides the connections and level you need. Consider this model only if its documented role solves the specific need described above; check the alternatives and all remaining costs before changing equipment.

When to reassess

Reassess after a material manual or firmware change, an independently reproduced issue, a hardware revision, or a documented change in service or repair availability. A routine update does not prove that an existing issue is resolved.

Ownership evidence

No six-month ownership study was performed. Battery wear, pad or stylus replacement, service dependence and local repair access should be evaluated for the actual use case. No future reliability outcome is predicted.

Firmware, manual and support

The linked official model manual was read for connection and operation conditions. Follow the manual matching your hardware and market. Current firmware, app compatibility and the long-term repair horizon remain unverified unless separately stated.

Launch day, globally uniform price, local authorized stock, repair turnaround and guaranteed support end date were not established in this review. Regional store offers are not global availability. No defect-free or six-month reliability claim is made.

Official model manual

Unresolved source conflicts

  • The model page lists 24/96 optical and a 32-ohm power load; manual v2.3 lists 24/192 optical and 33 ohms. Keep both source conditions; the exact usable optical ceiling needs unit/host verification.
