Bowers & Wilkins 705 S3
A passive two-way standmount with a separate top-mounted Carbon Dome tweeter, Continuum mid/bass driver and bi-wire terminals; retain the 705 S3 identity, not Signature.
Evidence checked / updated: 2026-10-11. Manufacturer claims and editorial system-fit assessment. No SoundPath Lab listening or measurement test.
Verified documentation
- Drivers / terminals: 25mm Carbon Dome tweeter and 165mm Continuum mid/bass; vented enclosure, dual linked speaker-terminal pairs.
- Response / sensitivity: 50Hz–28kHz ±3dB, 88dB SPL at 2.83Vrms/1m. The separate 45Hz–33kHz range on the page omits a tolerance; do not replace the ±3dB specification.
- Load / amplifier: Nominal 8Ω; AU page minimum 3.7Ω, German page 3.1Ω: unresolved regional source conflict. 30–120W into 8Ω on unclipped programme is amplifier guidance, not SPL measured output.
- Distortion / dimensions: Second/third harmonics at 90dB/1m on axis: <1% 100Hz–22kHz, <0.5% 150Hz–20kHz. Overall H413 × W192 × D337mm incl. grille/terminals; 9.58kg.
Best for
A system with appropriate stand height, space for the top tweeter and an amplifier demonstrably comfortable with low-impedance speaker loads.
Avoid if
You need active connectivity, a small fully enclosed shelf, a simple guaranteed 8Ω load or published specifications to prove superior sound.
Limits and unknowns
Minimum impedance conflicts across official regions; nominal 8Ω is not a minimum. Stand/room integration and unclipped drive matter. Top tweeter decoupling can feel loose according to the manual; do not assume all movement means a fault.
Current verdict
A passive two-way standmount with a separate top-mounted Carbon Dome tweeter, Continuum mid/bass driver and bi-wire terminals; retain the 705 S3 identity, not Signature.
Why it fits
A system with appropriate stand height, space for the top tweeter and an amplifier demonstrably comfortable with low-impedance speaker loads.
What it can replace
A passive standmount in a suitable amplifier/stand system needing this physical format; it does not replace an active speaker or eliminate subwoofer/room requirements.
What it cannot replace
You need active connectivity, a small fully enclosed shelf, a simple guaranteed 8Ω load or published specifications to prove superior sound.
What SoundPath Lab tested
Official model documentation and the listed sources were reviewed. No SoundPath Lab unit was listened to, measured, installed or firmware-retested. L2 is complete decision coverage, not independent test acceptance or a score.
What remains untested
Actual sound, noise, output limits, room response or digital compatibility, unit variation and long-term reliability remain untested. No owner case or fix outcome was independently assessed in this revision.
System conditions
Connect amplifier speaker outputs with consistent polarity. Keep terminal links for single-wire use; remove only for correctly configured bi-wire/bi-amp operation. Manual starting placement is 1.5–3m speaker separation and at least 0.5m from back/side walls, then adjust for the room. Use low-impedance-capable amplification pending the spec conflict.
Alternatives by need
Special Forty offers a different single-terminal passive design; Concept 30 differs in cabinet/height and load specification. Choose by placement, amplification and audition, not incompatible sensitivity or marketing comparisons.
Keep or upgrade
Keep an existing system that already meets these conditions. Upgrade only to solve a specific missing connection, operating requirement or physical constraint. Validate the intended chain before purchase; the documented differences do not establish audible superiority.
When to reassess
Review after a material official specification/configuration change, relevant verified issue, support withdrawal or accepted independent testing. Do not close an issue or infer a maturity change from routine marketing edits.
Ownership evidence
Long-term ownership evidence is pending. No six-month durability or reliability result is claimed.
Firmware, manual and support
The official 700 Series 3 manual includes 705 S3 installation, linked terminals, positioning and care. No firmware, app or subscription applies to passive playback. Regional warranty and repair/driver availability were not established.
Current local price, stock, regional warranty, spare parts and guaranteed support horizon remain Unknown. Current official documentation does not prove authorised local stock or a launch/shipping date. Confirm the offer and service terms for the exact configuration.
Unresolved source conflicts
- AU official 705 S3 page says 8Ω, minimum 3.7Ω; German official 705 S3 says minimum 3.1Ω. This is not resolved as a regional hardware revision or by averaging. Confirm the exact supplied unit and current manufacturer specification; the central minimum stays conflicted.
