TOPPING Centaurus

A desktop R2R digital converter and variable/fixed line source with broad digital inputs and input-dependent parametric EQ.

Evidence checked / updated: 2026-10-11. Manufacturer claims and editorial system-fit assessment. No SoundPath Lab listening or measurement test.

Verified documentation

  • Digital inputs: USB, optical, coaxial, AES, Bluetooth and HDMI-style I²S; I²S is not HDMI ARC or video.
  • Port ceilings: USB/I²S: PCM32/768, native DSD512, DoP256; optical/coaxial/AES: PCM24/192 and DoP64.
  • EQ limits: Manual: PEQ on USB/coaxial/optical/AES up to PCM24/192, Bluetooth to24/96; I²S unsupported. TOPPING Tune stores five custom presets for offline operation.
  • Analogue outputs: RCA and XLR, PRE variable or DAC fixed; table 2.1/4.2Vrms at0dBFS in4V mode and2.6/5.2Vrms in5V mode. No headphone output.
  • Bluetooth and control: AAC/SBC/aptX/aptX HD/aptX Adaptive/LDAC reception; remote, 12V trigger in/out, AC100–240V.

Best for

a multi-source line-level system needing R2R topology and conditional stored EQ

Avoid if

headphone amplification, HDMI TV ARC, native network streaming or EQ on every format/input

Limits and unknowns

R2R and oversampling modes do not establish audible superiority. PEQ has separate rate/input limits and is not available on I²S. Fixed DAC mode outputs maximum level; volume matching and pinout verification matter.

Current verdict

A conditional shortlist for a multi-source line-level system needing R2R topology and conditional stored EQ. Decide on the documented role and constraints below; no independent sound-quality ranking is implied.

Why it fits

A desktop R2R digital converter and variable/fixed line source with broad digital inputs and input-dependent parametric EQ. The buying assessment is an editorial inference from its documented topology, rather than a listening conclusion.

What it can replace

It can cover the specific functions described in this profile when the connected source, load, control and power path meet the stated conditions. Treat a change as solving a concrete interface or workflow need; do not assume an audible improvement from chipset, price, clock or component-count claims.

What it cannot replace

headphone amplification, HDMI TV ARC, native network streaming or EQ on every format/input

What SoundPath Lab tested

SoundPath Lab checked primary-source model identity, the stated interfaces and specifications, source conflicts and this decision profile. No device was listened to, measured, installed, firmware-retested or endurance-tested for this batch. L2 means documented decision coverage.

What remains untested

Sound preference, actual noise with your load, room behavior, software and service compatibility, connection stability and long-term reliability remain untested. Vendor measurements remain vendor claims and cannot be read as SPL test results.

System conditions

Use a compatible external amp/active speaker input. Establish I²S pinout and DSD channel settings before connecting. Match the selected line level to downstream headroom; configure Tune through the supported host, and verify DSP behavior for the actual source.

Alternatives by need

D50 III is smaller and its PEQ is USB-only; D90 III SABRE offers another digital-DAC topology without implying a measured sound advantage. Choose on connections and EQ path.

Keep or upgrade

Keep a working system when its existing connections and usable level already meet your needs. Before switching, confirm the limitation most relevant to you, the comparison models, all adapters or licenses, and local service. More functions do not by themselves justify replacement.

When to reassess

Reassess after a material firmware/manual change, independently reproduced issue, hardware revision or documented service change. Routine firmware availability does not close an owner issue. No arbitrary future date is needed for unchanged facts.

Ownership evidence

No six-month ownership study was performed. Budget for the actual consumables, battery or tube service where applicable, app/service dependence, and local repair access. Their future durability and availability are unknown unless independently established.

Firmware, manual and support

The model-specific documentation linked below was checked for the signal path and operating conditions. Use documentation matching the actual hardware and market. Warranty, parts supply, repair turnaround and any promised support end date must be checked locally; a downloadable manual is not a support-duration guarantee.

An exact worldwide launch date, globally uniform price, authorized local stock and delivery date were not established unless explicitly stated below. A regional price or launch is not a global availability claim. No defect-free or six-month ownership conclusion is made.
