Rega Planar 2
A manual belt-drive turntable with RB220 arm and glass platter for users willing to set tracking force and bias; verify the factory cartridge configuration before ordering.
Evidence checked / updated: 2026-10-11. Manufacturer claims and editorial system-fit assessment. No SoundPath Lab listening or measurement test.
Verified documentation
- Drive and arm: 33⅓/45 rpm by belt relocation; RB220 arm has adjustable bias since autumn 2020; 10mm glass platter and 24V motor.
- Cartridge configuration: The page lists Carbon MM as standard and an optional factory Nd3 MM configuration added in May 2024. The reviewed manual specifies 2g for Carbon; do not apply that value to Nd3. Confirm the supplied cartridge and its own instructions.
- Physical and output: 447 × 117 × 360mm with lid closed, 5.5kg. Fixed stereo phono leads require an external or amplifier-integrated MM phono stage.
Best for
A vinyl system needing manual cartridge setup flexibility and already providing appropriate MM equalisation and amplification.
Avoid if
You need automatic operation, electronic speed switching, a built-in phono stage or USB recording.
Limits and unknowns
Tracking force and bias must match the actual cartridge. Legacy and current arm configurations differ; verify the purchased unit rather than assuming all Planar 2s are identical.
Current verdict
A manual belt-drive turntable with RB220 arm and glass platter for users willing to set tracking force and bias; verify the factory cartridge configuration before ordering.
Why it fits
A vinyl system needing manual cartridge setup flexibility and already providing appropriate MM equalisation and amplification.
What it can replace
A compatible existing device performing this documented role, when a real connection or workflow requirement is missing. Check downstream levels, space and total system cost before replacing it.
What it cannot replace
You need automatic operation, electronic speed switching, a built-in phono stage or USB recording.
What SoundPath Lab tested
Official model documentation and the linked manual were reviewed. No SoundPath Lab unit was listened to, measured, installed or firmware-retested for this revision. L2 identifies decision coverage, not independent testing or a product score.
What remains untested
Actual sound, electrical or acoustic performance, unit variation, compatibility in the proposed system, long-term reliability and remedy outcomes remain untested. Owner cases were not collected in this revision. Manufacturer specifications must not be treated as SPL results.
System conditions
Level the support, balance the arm and set the actual cartridge tracking force/bias per its instructions. Connect to an MM stage and avoid feeding cartridge-level output directly into an ordinary line input.
Alternatives by need
Planar 1 favours simpler preset-bias setup. Fono MM MK5 is a matching-role external MM stage; neither is evidence that replacing a properly set existing deck improves sound.
Keep or upgrade
Keep working equipment if it meets these requirements. Upgrade for a missing function, appropriate physical fit or a documented system constraint; no audible superiority is established here. Audition or validate the intended chain before committing to a replacement.
When to reassess
Reassess after revised official specifications, hardware configuration changes, a relevant verified issue, support withdrawal or independently accepted tests. A routine product-page edit does not justify a maturity change or issue closure.
Ownership evidence
Long-term ownership evidence is pending; no six-month listening, durability or reliability result is claimed.
Firmware, manual and support
The official page links the model manual and describes a limited lifetime manufacturing-defect warranty. Consumables and wear are excluded and country terms may vary; confirm with the authorised local dealer. These analogue models have no documented user firmware or subscription dependency.
Current local price, stock, regional warranty terms, repair lead time and guaranteed future support period are Unknown. An accessible official page is not evidence of local stock. Confirm the exact offer and service terms before purchase.
