Audiolab PPA7
L2 Decision Profile · documentation and editorial system fit
Current verdict
An MM/MC phono preamplifier with headphone output, Bluetooth transmission and USB-C vinyl recording; those outputs have explicit operating restrictions.
Best for
A vinyl system needing cartridge loading choices, direct headphone listening or documented computer recording alongside an analogue amplifier path.
Avoid if
Unsuitable for general USB-DAC playback or simultaneous Bluetooth transmission and USB recording; headphones and connected Bluetooth receivers mute analogue Pre Out.
Strengths and limits
Separate MM/MC inputs, selectable loading, fixed/adjustable RCA Pre Out and 6.3 mm headphones support several documented vinyl workflows.
What remains untested
Computer/driver combinations, installed firmware, analogue/headphone performance, latency and long-term reliability have not been independently tested.
System conditions
Match the cartridge input and load, and connect ground as directed. Use Fixed Pre Out with downstream volume control; use Adjustable directly into a power amp or active speakers. USB Record disables Bluetooth. Headphones or a connected Bluetooth device mute Pre Out.
Alternatives by need
Rega Fono MM MK5 is a documented MM-only analogue alternative when MC, direct headphones, Bluetooth and USB recording are unnecessary. Keep an existing correctly matched phono input if it already meets the system need; no audible improvement is established here.
Keep or upgrade
Add the PPA7 for a missing cartridge, headphone or recording path. Do not replace a suitable phono stage solely for a higher sample-rate number or untested sound claims.
Specifications and documented boundaries
Manufacturer claims; not SPL measurements.
| Cartridge inputs | Separate RCA MM and MC inputs; MM 47 kohm with 100/220 pF, MC 100/330 ohm. Match the cartridge maker instructions. |
|---|---|
| Analogue/headphone outputs | Stereo RCA Pre Out with Fixed/Adjustable mode; front 6.3 mm headphone output. Headphones and connected Bluetooth receivers mute Pre Out. |
| Bluetooth direction | Bluetooth 5.3 TRANSMITTER with aptX HD for compatible receiving headphones/speakers; not a documented music receiver. |
| USB-C direction | Audio recording OUTPUT to a compatible PC/Mac, 44.1-192 kHz at 16/24 bits; not a computer playback-DAC input. |
| Recording conditions | Enable USB Record and select the Audiolab recording input in software. Windows may require the IAG USB 2.0 driver. USB Record disables Bluetooth. |
| USB-A direction | Rear USB-A is the firmware update port; follow the exact official package instructions. The manual screen example is not a verified installed or latest release. |
| Power/control | Use the supplied 12 V DC adapter and verify its local mains rating. Separate 12 V trigger input/output are control connections. |
Availability and support
Public and verified; no actual stock, shipment or transaction price has been independently established. Manual says coverage varies by country; use the authorized regional dealer/service route.
The official manual documents the USB-A update menu and routes persistent faults to an authorized Audiolab dealer/service centre. Country warranty terms vary. The displayed firmware screenshot is an example, not a current-version receipt; compatible host/driver behavior and parts availability remain unverified.
Unknowns
- Exact launch, stock and regional delivery
- Current installed/latest firmware
- Exact host, driver and Bluetooth interoperability
- Independent phono/headphone/recording results and long-term service horizon
Evidence and reassessment
