# WiiM Amp vs Amp Pro vs Amp Ultra: AirPlay, Dolby 5.1 and Power

## Direct answer

Choose the **[original WiiM Amp](https://www.soundpathlab.com/product-profile-wiim-amp/)** if AirPlay 2 is important and your TV system only needs stereo or 2.1-channel PCM. It remains the only one of these three amplifiers that WiiM lists as an AirPlay 2 receiver.

Choose the **[WiiM Amp Pro](https://www.soundpathlab.com/product-profile-wiim-amp-pro/)** if 60 watts per channel at 8 ohms is enough, but you want Dolby Digital input and the option to use the amplifier as the hub of a modular WiiM 5.1 system. The Pro is primarily a compatibility and platform upgrade over the original Amp—not a published-power upgrade.

Choose the **[WiiM Amp Ultra](https://www.soundpathlab.com/product-profile-wiim-amp-ultra/)** if you also want WiiM's published 100-watt-per-channel output, a 3.5-inch display and front-panel control. It supports the same basic Dolby Digital 5.1 hub role as the Amp Pro, but it still does not receive AirPlay and does not turn the system into a Dolby Atmos or DTS home theater.

Choose **none of them** if you need native AirPlay reception and WiiM's modular Dolby 5.1 hub function in the same amplifier. Also choose an AVR or another home-theater platform if you need Dolby Atmos, DTS decoding, several wired surround channels or conventional HDMI source switching.

The table is based on WiiM's current product pages and support documentation, checked on September 12, 2026\. The original Amp's Dolby row needs one important qualification explained below.

## Amp Pro is not a power upgrade from Amp

The easiest mistake in this comparison is to read “Pro” as “more amplifier power.” WiiM publishes the same output ratings for the original Amp and Amp Pro: 60 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 120 watts per channel into 4 ohms.

The Amp Pro instead changes the platform around that power stage. WiiM lists Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, an ESS ES9038Q2M DAC and post-filter feedback. More importantly for a TV system, WiiM's current 5.1 setup documentation names the Amp Pro as an eligible home-theater hub and excludes the original Amp from that hub list.

That makes the Pro upgrade rational when a new system requirement has appeared—especially Dolby Digital or modular multichannel support. It is much harder to justify if the original Amp already drives the speakers comfortably, AirPlay is useful and the system will remain stereo or 2.1.

**Editorial inference:** For an existing original Amp owner, replacing it with the Pro solely for a presumed increase in loudness is not supported by WiiM's published ratings.

## AirPlay creates a real trade-off

[WiiM’s current AirPlay 2 support list](https://www.soundpathlab.com/does-wiim-amp-pro-support-airplay-2/) includes the original WiiM Amp but not the Amp Pro or Amp Ultra. That is not a minor checklist difference for an Apple-centered household. If iPhones, iPads or Macs regularly send audio through the native AirPlay interface, moving from the original Amp to either newer model can remove an established workflow.

WiiM's own app, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Chromecast or other supported paths may cover a particular household's needs, but they are not identical replacements for every AirPlay use case.

Before upgrading, identify the actual source path:

1. If household users press the AirPlay icon in Apple apps, preserve the original Amp or add a separate AirPlay-capable source.
2. If playback already starts through the WiiM Home app or a direct-connect service, the missing AirPlay receiver may be irrelevant.
3. If both AirPlay and modular 5.1 are non-negotiable, none of the three is a clean single-box answer.

## What WiiM's Dolby 5.1 system actually is

[WiiM’s 5.1 implementation](https://www.soundpathlab.com/wiim-5-1-home-theater-existing-speakers/) is a modular networked system, not a conventional AVR hidden inside a small stereo amplifier.

WiiM's current setup guide lists the Amp Pro, Amp Ultra and WiiM Ultra as eligible hubs. The hub handles the front-left and front-right channels. Compatible WiiM devices can then be assigned to the center and surround roles, while low-frequency effects can go to a wired subwoofer or WiiM Sub Pro. The guide describes 3.0, 3.1, 4.0, 4.1, 5.0 and 5.1 layouts.

The source must supply Dolby Digital 5.1\. WiiM explicitly says DTS and Dolby Atmos are not supported on the Amp Pro and Amp Ultra. A TV connects to the hub through its [HDMI ARC/eARC](https://www.soundpathlab.com/tv-audio-not-working-hdmi-arc-earc-cec-pcm-optical/)\-labeled port or optical output, but the amplifier itself is an ARC device; an eARC label on the TV does not add Atmos capability to the amplifier.

This architecture can suit a room where running speaker cable to every channel is difficult. It is less suitable when the goal is broad format support, multiple HDMI sources, guaranteed interoperability with arbitrary passive surround speakers or the predictable wired topology of an AVR.

## WiiM's original Amp documentation conflicts on Dolby

This is the point that should not be flattened into a simple specification row.

The current original WiiM Amp product page says its home-theater audio format is **Stereo PCM only** and that Dolby Digital and DTS are not supported. WiiM's current 5.1 setup guide also excludes the original Amp from the list of eligible hubs.

However, a separate WiiM support article about Apple TV and Dolby audio lists the Amp and Vibelink Amp together with support for PCM and Dolby Digital. That page was marked modified on December 26, 2025 when checked.

These statements do not fully agree. Until WiiM reconciles them, SoundPath Lab uses the current product page's **Stereo PCM-only** statement as the safe setup and buying baseline for the original Amp. Owners should not purchase or reconfigure a system on the assumption that the original Amp will act like an Amp Pro in a Dolby 5.1 installation.

**Evidence label:** Official-source conflict. Dolby behavior beyond the current product-page statement is Unknown / Awaiting Manufacturer Clarification, not SoundPath Lab Tested.

## When Amp Ultra is worth the extra step

The Amp Ultra is the only model here for which WiiM publishes 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 200 watts per channel into 4 ohms. It also adds the 3.5-inch display, front-panel interaction, an ESS ES9039Q2M DAC and a dual-TPA3255 amplifier design with PFFB.

Those differences matter when the buyer actually needs one of them:

- The speakers or listening distance create a credible need for more output headroom.
- The amplifier will be visible and local playback control is useful.
- A new system needs a WiiM 5.1 hub and the Ultra's interface is worth paying for.

They matter less when the existing Amp or Amp Pro already reaches the required level cleanly and all control happens from a phone. Published watts alone do not establish an audible improvement at ordinary listening levels.

SoundPath Lab has not completed a controlled three-model comparison of continuous output, heat, difficult-load behavior or volume-matched sound. Those questions remain open rather than being inferred from the model names.

## Keep or upgrade

### Keep the original WiiM Amp if

- AirPlay 2 is part of the household routine.
- Stereo or 2.1 PCM from the TV is sufficient.
- The current speakers already reach the required level without obvious strain.
- You do not have a concrete plan to build a WiiM Dolby 5.1 system.

### Upgrade from Amp to Amp Pro only if

- Dolby Digital input or the 5.1 hub role solves a real system requirement.
- You want the newer wireless platform or PFFB implementation for a specific reason.
- You have confirmed that losing native AirPlay reception will not break an important workflow.

Do not make this move for published power alone; WiiM rates both models the same.

### Choose Amp Ultra over Amp Pro if

- The higher published output is appropriate for the speakers, room and listening distance.
- The display and physical interface will be used.
- The price difference is smaller than the cost and inconvenience of adding those capabilities separately.

### Keep the Amp Pro if you already own it

Moving to the Ultra is mainly a power-and-interface decision. If the Pro already drives the speakers comfortably and the amplifier is controlled remotely, the newer model does not create a new surround format tier. Both remain limited to Dolby Digital rather than DTS or Atmos.

## Who should skip this family

Skip all three as the center of the system if you need:

- Dolby Atmos or DTS decoding;
- several conventional wired surround channels;
- multiple HDMI source inputs and AVR-style switching;
- AirPlay and WiiM 5.1 hub support in one integrated amplifier;
- a purchase decision based on independently verified simultaneous power and thermal testing that is not yet available here.

A stereo-first listener should also resist paying for multichannel capability that will never be configured. The least expensive model that preserves the required source paths and drives the speakers adequately is often the better long-term choice.

## Current verdict

The three WiiM amplifiers do not form a simple good-better-best ladder.

The original Amp has the strongest case for an Apple household that wants a compact stereo or 2.1 TV-and-music system. The Amp Pro keeps the original model's published power but changes the compatibility equation by adding a supported Dolby Digital 5.1 hub role and removing AirPlay reception. The Amp Ultra adds materially higher published power and a display, but it preserves the same central format limitations: no AirPlay receiver, DTS or Dolby Atmos.

Start with the dependency that cannot be removed—AirPlay, multichannel format, speaker power requirement or local interface—not with the newest model name.

## What we still do not know

- Why WiiM's original Amp Dolby statements conflict across its official pages.
- How all three compare in a simultaneous, controlled continuous-power and thermal test.
- How the modular 5.1 system performs over long periods across different network conditions and device combinations.
- Whether future firmware changes will alter device eligibility or format support.
