# How to Wire Passive Speakers: Polarity, Phase and Bi-Wire Jumpers

A reversed speaker cable rarely produces silence. The system usually still plays, which is why the mistake can survive for months. Instead, the stereo image may feel vague, centered voices may refuse to stay in the middle, and bass can become unexpectedly thin when both speakers play together.

**Safety first:** Before touching speaker cables, stop playback, turn the amplifier off and disconnect its power cable. Never reconnect bare speaker wire while an amplifier is operating.

## The short answer

Connect the amplifier's positive terminal to the speaker's positive terminal and negative to negative:

Amplifier red (+) → speaker red (+)  
Amplifier black (−) → speaker black (−)

Use one identifiable conductor for positive along the entire cable run. It may have a stripe, printed text, ridge or different colour. The marking does not make that conductor electrically positive by itself; it simply helps you use the same conductor at both ends. Repeat the same convention for the other speaker.

**Verified fact:** Yamaha and Denon both specify positive-to-positive and negative-to-negative connections in their manuals. Yamaha also documents that reversed speaker polarity can make the sound unnatural and reduce bass. Bowers & Wilkins gives the same red-positive connection rule in its loudspeaker documentation.

## Polarity and phase are related, but not identical

The words are often used interchangeably in home audio, but they describe different things.

**Polarity inversion** swaps positive and negative. The entire waveform is electrically inverted.

**Phase shift** describes a timing relationship that can vary with frequency. Loudspeaker crossovers, driver spacing, listening distance, room reflections and DSP delay can all change phase without a speaker cable being reversed.

Calling a reversed connection “180 degrees out of phase” is common shorthand. It is useful in casual troubleshooting, but polarity inversion is the more precise description of what happened at the terminals.

This distinction matters because reversing a cable is not a universal cure for every phase-related problem. A subwoofer with adjustable delay, a loudspeaker's internal crossover and a room cancellation require different diagnosis.

## What happens when one speaker is reversed

When one loudspeaker is connected with opposite polarity, its cone motion is reversed relative to the other speaker for the same electrical signal.

Where the two speakers reproduce common content—especially centered vocals and bass—their outputs can partially cancel at the listening position. The cancellation is not perfectly uniform because the speakers are separated and the room adds reflections, but the usual symptoms are recognizable:

- Bass sounds weaker when both speakers play.
- A mono vocal becomes broad, hollow or difficult to locate.
- The center image seems to sit everywhere except the center.
- Instruments appear attached to the individual speakers.
- Moving your head changes the apparent image unusually quickly.
- Each speaker sounds acceptable alone, but the pair sounds worse together.

**Verified fact:** Yamaha's AX-596 manual states that reversed speaker wires produce unnatural sound and a lack of bass.  
  
**Editorial inference:** A voice that becomes less focused only when both channels play is strong evidence of a left-right relationship problem, but it does not prove that polarity is the cause. Unequal placement, channel level, toe-in and room reflections can create similar symptoms.

## What if both speakers are reversed?

If both left and right speakers are reversed in the same way, their relative polarity remains matched. You should not expect the same dramatic loss of center image or left-right bass cancellation caused by reversing only one speaker.

The system's absolute polarity has changed, but recordings, source equipment and loudspeaker crossovers do not all preserve absolute polarity consistently. For ordinary setup, the practical priority is:

1. Follow the manufacturer's terminal markings.
2. Keep both channels wired consistently.
3. Keep every additional speaker or subwoofer aligned according to its own manual and calibration procedure.

Do not deliberately reverse both speakers to correct a vague stereo image. First verify the wiring, placement and channel balance.

## A safe wiring procedure

### 1\. Power the system down

Stop playback, set volume to minimum, switch off the amplifier and unplug it. Yamaha and Denon both warn against working on speaker connections while the equipment is powered. Apart from unwanted noise, a loose strand can bridge the terminals and activate protection or damage equipment.

### 2\. Identify left and right

Confirm which amplifier terminals are marked left and right. Trace each cable to the corresponding loudspeaker rather than assuming the nearest cable is correct. Reversing the left and right channels does not create a polarity fault, but it reverses the stereo image.

### 3\. Choose the marked conductor

Most two-conductor speaker cable provides a visual or tactile identifier: a printed stripe, repeating text, a moulded ridge, different insulation colours, or copper- and silver-coloured conductors. Choose one convention—for example, the striped side for positive—and use it at all four ends.

### 4\. Prepare only the required bare length

Follow the amplifier and speaker manuals. Yamaha and Denon manuals commonly illustrate about 10 mm of exposed conductor, but the correct length depends on the binding post. Twist loose strands together firmly. No copper should protrude far enough to touch the neighbouring terminal or amplifier chassis.

### 5\. Connect both channels consistently

Amplifier L red (+) → left speaker red (+)  
Amplifier L black (−) → left speaker black (−)  
  
Amplifier R red (+) → right speaker red (+)  
Amplifier R black (−) → right speaker black (−)

Tighten the terminals securely without using excessive force.

### 6\. Inspect for short circuits

- No loose strand crosses between red and black.
- Bare conductor does not touch the rear panel.
- The cable is clamped on metal conductor rather than insulation.
- Banana plugs are fully inserted where the product and regional terminal design permit them.
- No plug or spade can rotate into the adjacent terminal.

Incorrect polarity and a short circuit are different faults. A simple polarity reversal normally continues playing; red and black touching can trigger protection and may damage the amplifier.

### 7\. Start at low volume

Reconnect power, select a familiar source and begin quietly. Confirm that both channels play normally before increasing volume. If the amplifier displays a speaker-wire warning, enters protection, flashes an error indicator or repeatedly shuts down, power it off and inspect the connections again. Persistent protection with correctly terminated cables requires manufacturer support or qualified service.

## The four-terminal speaker trap

Some passive speakers have four binding posts: high-frequency positive and negative, plus low-frequency positive and negative.

When using one normal two-conductor cable, the two positive terminals and two negative terminals usually need the manufacturer-supplied metal links or jumper cables installed.

Amplifier + → either red speaker terminal  
Amplifier − → the corresponding black speaker terminal  
HF/LF links remain fitted

If a link is missing or loose, only part of the loudspeaker may play. The result can sound extremely dull, thin or incomplete even though polarity is correct.

Denon's PMA-1600NE manual specifically instructs users to remove the shorting bars for its documented bi-wire connection. That also establishes the opposite practical rule: do not remove them merely because the speaker has four terminals.

**Before removing any jumper:** Check the loudspeaker manual, amplifier manual and any external crossover or DSP documentation. Do not confuse bi-wiring with active bi-amplification. Active bi-amplification can damage drivers if configured incorrectly and is outside this guide.

## A five-minute listening test

### Use a true mono signal

Choose spoken voice, a mono recording or a test signal sent identically to left and right. Sit midway between the speakers. With matched polarity, the voice should normally form a stable phantom image near the center, assuming the speakers have comparable placement and level.

### Listen to one speaker at a time

Use the amplifier's balance control or disconnect one channel only while the system is powered down. If each speaker alone has reasonable bass but bass becomes much thinner when they play together, inspect relative polarity before changing EQ or buying a subwoofer.

### Correct only the confirmed fault

With the amplifier switched off and unplugged, verify the cable visually. If one channel is reversed, reconnect it according to the terminal labels and repeat the same passage at the same volume. Do not repeatedly swap live speaker cables as an A/B test.

**Experience-based recommendation:** Use the same short vocal and bass passages for every comparison. Change only one connection, keep the listening position fixed and record what changed.

## Problems that can sound like reversed polarity

### Unequal speaker placement

If one speaker is closer to the listener, aimed differently or beside a different wall, a centered voice can pull sideways or become unstable. Before changing cables again, measure both speaker-to-seat distances and compare toe-in. ### A room cancellation

Thin bass at one seat or over a narrow frequency range may come from speaker-boundary interference or a room-mode null. Cable polarity errors tend to affect the relationship between the speakers; room problems often change substantially when the seat or speakers move.

### A missing bi-wire link

A loudspeaker with disconnected HF or LF terminals may resemble a damaged driver. Confirm the jumper arrangement before arranging repair.

### Unequal channel level

A balance offset, amplifier gain setting, powered subwoofer crossover or source-channel problem can move the center image. Return balance and channel trim to known settings before diagnosing polarity by ear.

## Before buying new cables or equipment

Polarity is not improved by purchasing a more expensive cable. What matters here is continuity, adequate conductor size, secure termination and consistent identification at both ends.

- Verify all four terminal connections.
- Inspect for loose strands and damaged plugs.
- Confirm the four-terminal jumper arrangement.
- Test a mono voice with both speakers.
- Measure speaker-to-seat distances.
- Check channel balance and amplifier settings.
- Substitute a known-good cable only if a cable fault remains plausible.

## What is verified, inferred and experience-based

**Verified facts:** The cited Yamaha, Denon and Bowers & Wilkins documentation requires positive-to-positive and negative-to-negative connections. The manuals warn against exposed conductors touching adjacent terminals or chassis metal. Yamaha documents reduced bass and unnatural sound as consequences of reversed polarity. Denon documents removal of terminal links for its specified bi-wire arrangement.

**Editorial inference:** If two speakers sound fuller separately than together, a relative-polarity error is a strong candidate. The same symptom can still be produced by placement, channel routing, crossovers or room cancellation, so listening alone does not prove the wiring fault.

**Experience-based recommendations:** Use a centered mono voice, compare one speaker with both speakers, change one variable at a time, photograph the original wiring and label cable ends. These are repeatable troubleshooting practices rather than manufacturer specifications.

## Applicability, limitations and disclosure

**Applies to:** Conventional passive home loudspeakers connected to an integrated amplifier, stereo receiver, AV receiver or streaming amplifier. The basic polarity principle is worldwide and does not depend on mains frequency.

**Version and regional limits:** Binding-post design, banana-plug access, insulation requirements and supplied jumper hardware vary by model and country. Firmware is not normally relevant to physical speaker polarity, although DSP routing and calibration settings can change the resulting sound.
