**Status:** Under investigation · Workaround available
**Evidence level:** E1 — repeated reports in Naim’s official community, mixed counter-evidence, not independently reproduced
**Severity:** Low operational impact; no safety hazard identified
**Last checked:** September 4, 2026
**Next review:** October 2, 2026 18, 2026

## Summary

After installing firmware 5.4 on Naim New Classic streaming products, some owners report that the “Turn Off Display During Playback” preference does not remain effective after a full power cycle. The app may still show the preference as enabled, while the front display stays on during playback until the setting is switched off and on again.

This is not confirmed as a universal New Classic defect. The available reports are mixed: at least two different owners described the reset behaviour, while other owners reported normal operation after the same update. SoundPath Lab therefore classifies the issue as under investigation, not as an open-confirmed product defect.

## Issue record

**Issue ID:** SPL-NAI-DSP-002
**Brand:** Naim
**Affected products reported:** NSC 222 and NSS 333
**Firmware:** New Classic 5.4
**App version:** Not consistently stated; Naim/Focal app 8.2.0 was current during the reporting period
**Region:** Not established
**First public reports reviewed:** August 5, 2026
**Category:** Settings persistence / display behaviour
**Buyer impact:** The display may remain illuminated during playback after a restart, contrary to the saved preference
**Safety impact:** None identified
**Manufacturer response:** No formal Naim acknowledgement or fix commitment located in the reviewed thread
**Lifecycle status:** Current products; firmware remains available

## Reproduction conditions reported

1. Install firmware 5.4 on a compatible New Classic streamer.
2. Enable “Turn Off Display During Playback.”
3. Confirm that the display turns off during playback.
4. Fully power-cycle the streamer.
5. Resume playback and check whether the display remains on even though the app still shows the preference as enabled.

## Evidence

CraigDal reported the behaviour on an NSC 222 after updating to 5.4 and said the preference needed to be reset after each power cycle. Blackbird reported the same visible outcome on an NSS 333\. Both reports appeared in Naim’s official community thread for firmware 5.4.

The evidence is not uniform. MrFixit initially said the issue appeared resolved after updating, and Osiris reported not seeing the problem on an NSC 222\. This mixed result may indicate a model, app-state, installation-state or reproduction-condition dependency. It does not support a claim that every NSC 222, NSS 333 or New Classic product is affected.

## Workaround

Open the display setting, switch “Turn Off Display During Playback” off, leave the setting screen, return, and enable it again. Multiple participants reported that toggling the preference restores the intended behaviour until another power cycle.

A factory reset is not recommended solely for this symptom because the available evidence does not show that it provides a durable fix, and reset operations may remove user configuration.

## What remains unknown

The incidence rate, complete affected-model list, regional scope, dependency on the Naim/Focal app version, and whether Naim considers the behaviour a software defect remain unknown. No formal release note or support bulletin confirming a correction was found during the September 4 review.

## Editorial note

This record separates repeated owner observations from manufacturer-confirmed facts. Two reports are enough to justify investigation and a public workaround note, but not enough to label the entire product family defective. Brands may submit factual corrections and supporting evidence; editorial conclusions remain independent.

## Revision log

**September 4, 2026:** Evidence label aligned with the site-wide E1 definition after a fresh review found no formal Naim acknowledgement, support bulletin, or confirmed fix. Status remains Under investigation / Workaround available.

**August 12, 2026:** Draft record created after two independent same-symptom reports were identified on Naim’s official community. Status set to Under investigation / Workaround available.
