# ION Audio Cornerstone, Keystone and Sport Express Recall: Stop Using Affected Speakers

**Stop-use notice:** If you own an ION Audio Sport Express, Cornerstone, Cornerstone Glow or Keystone portable speaker covered by this recall, stop using and charging it. Do not sell, donate or give it away. Contact ION Audio to confirm eligibility and arrange the current remedy for your region. 

**Short answer:** This is a real, regulator-backed safety recall, not an unverified complaint. The battery can release hydrogen while charging and the speaker can burst, posing an explosion hazard. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission recorded five explosion reports, including four with surrounding property damage. No injuries were reported when the recall was announced.

The recall began in 2019, but it still matters in 2026 because these speakers can remain in homes, garages and second-hand listings. ION Audio still maintains a recall page and directs owners to stop use and request an exchange. A product's age does not cancel a safety recall.

Check the product name and UPC label on the bottom of the speaker. The official US and Canadian notices identify the following models:

ION's current recall page also says the serial number is on a barcode label underneath the product and begins with “(21)”. Because ION's current notice describes “certain” Sport Express units, do not infer eligibility from appearance alone; use the label and ask ION to confirm the serial number.

## What the official evidence says

**Verified fact:** The CPSC says hydrogen gas can leak from the battery while the speaker is charging. The speaker can then burst, creating an explosion hazard. The US recall covered about 41,000 units. The CPSC recorded five explosion reports, four of which damaged surrounding property, and no reported injuries at the announcement date.

**Verified fact:** Health Canada listed approximately 2,297 affected units sold in Canada from March 2016 to April 2019\. It likewise tells owners to stop using the speakers immediately and contact ION Audio for an exchange. Canada recorded no reported incidents or injuries as of 27 May 2019.

**Verified current status:** ION Audio's recall page remained accessible when checked on 6 September 2026\. It tells affected owners to stop use and contact its recall support team. ION presently describes the remedy as an updated replacement. The original US CPSC notice describes a refund in the form of an ION Audio gift card. Because remedy handling can change with time and region, confirm the current option directly with ION before shipping or disposing of the unit.

## What owners should do now

1. Stop playback and disconnect the charging cable or mains adapter if this can be done without handling a swollen, hot, hissing, leaking or damaged product.
2. Do not recharge, test or open the enclosure. Do not attempt a battery replacement as a home repair.
3. Photograph the bottom label and record the product name, UPC and serial number.
4. Contact ION Audio recall support. In the United States, ION lists 1-833-682-0371 and its online support portal. Canadian owners can use the regional details in the Health Canada notice.
5. Follow the manufacturer or regulator's packing, transport and disposal directions. Do not place a damaged battery product in ordinary mail or household recycling.

**Emergency exception:** If the speaker is hot, swollen, leaking, hissing, smoking or physically distorted, move away and contact local emergency services. Do not handle it merely to read the label. 

## Buying one second-hand

Do not buy an affected model unless the seller can provide written evidence that ION completed the recall remedy for that exact serial number. “It still works” is not evidence of safety. The reported failure occurs while charging, so a successful playback demonstration does not clear the battery or enclosure.

**Editorial inference:** Because these products were sold years ago, second-hand circulation is now a more plausible exposure route than new retail. That does not prove how many recalled units remain in use. The number of unrepaired units is unknown.

## Scope, severity and unknowns

- **Severity:** High. The documented failure mode can burst the enclosure and throw debris.
- **Affected region:** Confirmed in the United States and Canada. Owners elsewhere should contact ION because model distribution and remedies vary.
- **Firmware or app version:** Not applicable. This is a physical battery and enclosure safety issue.
- **Reproduction conditions:** Charging is the documented condition associated with hydrogen release. Owners should not attempt to reproduce the failure.
- **Failure rate:** Unknown. Five US reports do not establish the rate among all affected units.
- **Current incident total:** Unknown. The cited regulator pages provide the counts recorded at the time of their notices, not a live worldwide total.
- **Permanent fix:** ION offers a recall remedy; SoundPath Lab has not independently inspected a replacement unit.

## Evidence classification

**Confirmed facts:** The named products, model and UPC identifiers, charging-related hydrogen hazard, stop-use instruction, regulator case details and manufacturer recall are supported by official sources.

**Editorial inference:** The recall remains relevant to buyers because older speakers can continue circulating second-hand. This is a risk-management conclusion, not a claim about present ownership numbers.

**Unknown:** The number of affected speakers still in service, the global incident total after the original announcements, and the remedy available in every country. Those points should not be guessed from US or Canadian data.
