- Description: Hegel H200 vs A200 comparison: connected streaming or analog-first? Compare the 150W platform, inputs, update behavior, documentation conflicts and buyer fit.
- Author: SoundPath Lab
- Tags: Comparisons

**Hegel’s new H200 and A200 share the same basic amplifier platform, but they are not simply two trim levels.** The H200 is designed as a connected all-in-one integrated amplifier with streaming and digital inputs, while the A200 removes the network and DAC sections for buyers who want an analog-only signal path.

*This is a launch analysis based on manufacturer information, not a hands-on review. Final sound quality, thermal behavior, app reliability, phono noise, and speaker matching require independent testing.*

## The short comparison

- **H200 — “The Connected”:** 150 watts per channel, network streaming, DAC, MM phono input, headphone output, and USB-drive playback.
- **A200 — “The Classic”:** 150 watts per channel, MM phono input, headphone output, and expanded analog connectivity, but no built-in streamer or DAC.

Both are Class A/B integrated amplifiers and both are intended to provide the same basic output-power class. The buying decision is therefore less about power and more about system architecture.

## Why the H200 makes sense

The H200 is the simpler foundation for a modern system. A listener can connect speakers, a turntable with a moving-magnet cartridge, headphones, and network music services without immediately adding an external streamer and DAC.

That reduces the number of boxes, cables, power supplies, and control points. It also means more of the system depends on Hegel’s software support and on the long-term compatibility of its streaming platform. Buyers should check the final supported services, control apps, update policy, digital-input list, and multi-room behavior once the complete manual is available.

## Why the A200 may be the better long-term choice

The A200 is for listeners who already own a streamer and DAC they trust, or who prefer to upgrade digital components separately. Removing the digital and network sections avoids paying for duplicated functions and may make the amplifier easier to keep in a system for many years while streaming standards change around it.

Analog-only does not automatically mean better sound. The practical advantage is modularity: the amplifier remains the amplifier, while the digital front end can be replaced independently. The trade-off is higher total system complexity and potentially higher total cost after a suitable DAC and streamer are added.

## Shared amplifier platform

Hegel describes both models as using a 150-watt-per-channel Class A/B output stage with a frequency response extending from 5 Hz to 100 kHz. Both include a moving-magnet phono input derived from work associated with Hegel’s V10 phono stage.

The equal power rating matters. An A200 buyer should not expect more speaker-driving capability merely because the product is analog-only, and an H200 buyer is not necessarily accepting a weaker amplifier in exchange for streaming. Measurements will be needed to compare continuous power, burst power, noise, channel separation, and behavior into difficult loads.

## A naming issue buyers should know about

Hegel previously sold an older amplifier called H200, rated by the company at 200 watts per channel into 8 ohms. The 2026 H200 is a different product with a connected feature set and a 150-watt-per-channel specification. Used-market listings, forum posts, manuals, and search results may refer to the earlier model.

When researching or buying, look for the new “The Connected” description and verify the product generation, rear-panel layout, rated power, serial information, and warranty. Do not assume that an old H200 review describes the new amplifier.

**How to avoid the old/new H200 mix-up — Updated August 17, 2026**

Hegel's official discontinued-products page still identifies the earlier H200 as a 200-watt-per-channel integrated amplifier, and the company's manual archive also lists an H200 manual for that legacy generation. Those official legacy references can rank beside current launch coverage, so the model name alone is not enough to identify the product.

For the 2026 amplifier, verify all of the following before paying: the “H200 — The Connected” description, the stated 150-watt-per-channel rating, the connected/streaming feature set, the rear-panel layout, the seller's product photographs and the generation shown on the invoice. A listing that instead describes 200 watts per channel, a 1000 VA dual-mono supply or the older input layout is referring to the discontinued H200, not the 2026 model discussed here.

Last checked: August 17, 2026\. Hegel's official discontinued-product page and manual archive were rechecked to document the legacy H200 naming collision. A final model-specific manual for the 2026 H200/A200 was not located in the public support archive during this check.

Revision note: Updated August 17, 2026 — Added official legacy-product and manual-archive evidence so buyers can distinguish the discontinued 200-watt H200 from the 2026 150-watt “H200 — The Connected.” No buying recommendation changed.

## Which one should you choose?

- Choose the **H200** if you want one main component, use streaming daily, and value simpler installation.
- Choose the **A200** if you already own a strong digital front end, prefer component-level upgrades, or run an analog-centered system.
- Wait for full reviews if your decision depends on streaming-service support, DAC performance, phono noise, headphone output power, or difficult speaker loads.

## Price, availability and documentation status

### Documentation conflict updated 14 September 2026

Hegel's current-generation H200 user manual confirms two optical inputs and USB-B up to 24-bit/192 kHz, matching the model-specific product page. Hegel's support comparison chart still lists three optical inputs and USB at 24-bit/96 kHz, so the chart remains inconsistent with the manual and product page. Buyers who depend on those connections should treat the manual and rear-panel layout as the primary model-specific evidence and keep the chart discrepancy in mind. Reassessment — 14 September 2026
Hegel's current-generation H200 user manual is now public. It confirms two optical inputs and USB-B up to 24-bit/192 kHz, matching the model-specific product page; Hegel's separate support comparison chart still lists three optical inputs and USB at 24-bit/96 kHz. The manual also states that the H200 checks for and installs updates when entering standby, with critical updates able to install immediately even while the device is in use.
Reviewed — verdict unchanged. The H200 remains the simpler connected choice; the A200 remains the more modular analogue choice. This reassessment adds manufacturer documentation, not SoundPath Lab hands-on testing.

## Update — 4 September 2026: final official specifications

Hegel’s model-specific product pages are now live, so several launch-stage questions can be replaced with confirmed manufacturer specifications. Both models are rated at 150 watts per channel into 8 ohms, are stable into 2-ohm loads, and have a stated damping factor above 4,000\. They share an MM phono input, headphone output, fixed and variable RCA outputs, and a 43 × 41 × 12 cm chassis.

### H200 confirmed configuration

The H200 has one balanced XLR and two unbalanced RCA analogue inputs. Its digital section includes coaxial input up to 24-bit/192 kHz, two optical inputs up to 24-bit/96 kHz, USB-B up to 24-bit/192 kHz, USB-A drive playback and network playback up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Hegel lists Spotify Connect Lossless, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Apple AirPlay, Google Cast, airable, UPnP and Roon Ready support. Control4 and Crestron integration are also listed.

### A200 confirmed configuration

The A200 is fully analogue, with no built-in DAC, streamer or digital input. It provides two balanced XLR and two RCA analogue inputs, plus the shared MM phono, headphone, fixed-output and variable-output connections. This confirms that the A200 is the modular choice, not a lower-power version of the H200.

### What remains unverified

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Sound quality, thermal behavior, phono noise, headphone power, DAC performance, app reliability and behavior with difficult loudspeaker loads still require hands-on testing. Firmware-dependent services and regional availability can also change.
