- Description: Compare FiiO FT15, FT5 and FT1 Pro by design, weight, drivability, system role and upgrade logic—without treating manufacturer specifications as listening tests.

**Quick answer:** choose the **FT1 Pro** for value and lower weight, the **FT5** only when its discounted price makes sense, and the **FT15** when you specifically want FIIO's newest premium planar platform. A higher model number alone is not a reason for an FT5 owner to upgrade.

> **Evidence scope:** this comparison uses FIIO's official specifications and manufacturer positioning. SoundPath Lab has not yet completed hands-on listening, measurements, durability testing, or long-term ownership verification for these three headphones.

## The decision in one table

| **FiiO FT5**     | Previous-generation premium open-back planar | 90 mm; about 6 μm              | 36 Ω; 96 dB/mW                                                  | 456 g  | Existing owner or buyer finding a meaningful clearance price      | FT15 is the direct newer-generation path; avoid near-new-model pricing |

## Choose FT15 for the newest premium FIIO planar platform

FIIO specifies a 101 mm driver, an 800 nm diaphragm, a full-surface diamond coating, 95 dB/mW sensitivity and a 425 g chassis. The included cable system uses a 4.4 mm connection and adds 6.35 mm and XLR-4 adapters, so the package is ready for several desktop and balanced systems without an immediate cable purchase.

Buy FT15 if:

- you are deliberately shopping above FT1 Pro rather than merely looking for the least expensive planar headphone;
- you listen in a quiet room where an open-back design is appropriate;
- you value the included balanced connection options;
- you accept that independent measurements and long-term reliability evidence remain limited.

Skip FT15 if:

- you need isolation for commuting, an office, or a shared room;
- you already own FT5 and cannot identify a specific problem the lower weight, larger driver, or updated diaphragm would solve;
- price matters more than platform novelty.

## Choose FT1 Pro when value and lower weight matter most

FT1 Pro is not simply a smaller FT15\. FIIO lists a 95 × 86 mm planar driver, a 1 μm diaphragm, 20 Ω impedance, 95 dB/mW sensitivity and approximately 374 g weight. On paper, it is the lightest of these three and the least expensive route into FIIO's open-back planar family.

For most first-time planar buyers, FT1 Pro is the rational starting point. Spend the difference on the source chain only when your current DAC or amplifier cannot provide clean output at the volume and EQ headroom you need. Do not assume a more expensive amplifier is automatically required.

### FT1 Pro issue context — 16 October 2026

Before choosing FT1 Pro for substantial bass EQ or unusually high playback levels, read the [existing FT1 / FT1 Pro issue record](https://www.soundpathlab.com/fiio-ft1-ft1-pro-loose-screw-distortion-issues/). Its new review separates a pre-release/retail sample comparison, a purchased sample’s bass clipping, and lower-distortion counter-context measured under different conditions. Those results do not define a universal threshold or failure rate. FiiO’s response remains unverified independently; a more expensive amplifier does not establish a remedy. This scoped update adds risk context, not a SoundPath Lab listening comparison or a verified reason to upgrade to FT15 or FT5.

## Choose FT5 only when price or availability makes the case

FT5 established FIIO's full-size planar line with a 90 mm driver and an approximately 6 μm diaphragm. FIIO's current FT15 page identifies FT5 as the previous generation and compares the newer model's larger active area and thinner diaphragm against it.

That changes the buying logic:

- A meaningful clearance price can still make FT5 sensible.
- Existing FT5 owners should keep it unless comfort, weight, accessories, or a verified performance difference matters to them.
- New buyers should not pay near-FT15 pricing for FT5 without a clear reason.

## What none of these replaces

All three are open-back headphones. They do not replace a closed-back model when isolation is the actual requirement. FIIO's dynamic-driver FT1 is the more relevant family alternative for travel, office use, or a shared room.

They also do not automatically require a new DAC or amplifier. The published sensitivities for FT15, FT5 and FT1 Pro indicate that FIIO intends them to be approachable, but real headroom depends on listening level, source voltage, EQ, and recording dynamics.

## Upgrade advice

### From FT1 Pro

Consider FT15 when you want the more premium chassis and accessory package and specifically value the newer 101 mm platform. Do not upgrade only because the model number is higher.

### From FT5

Keep FT5 unless at least one of these is true:

1. its fit or 456 g weight creates a real comfort problem;
2. you need the FT15 connection package;
3. independent listening or measurements demonstrate a difference you value;
4. the net upgrade cost after resale is acceptable.

### From closed-back FT1

This is a use-case change, not a linear upgrade. Move to one of the planar models for quiet-room, open-back listening; keep FT1 when isolation matters.

## Current verdict

- **Best default value:** FT1 Pro.
- **Best premium-spec choice:** FT15, subject to independent verification.
- **Best opportunistic buy:** FT5 only at a clearly lower price.
- **Best isolation choice:** none of these; use a closed-back headphone.
